Collectors-What's on your wish list?

Postby Good Whiskey Hunting » Wed Oct 17, 2012 10:30 pm

I was reading another Topic about your favourite bottle HERE so I thought it would be interesting to start another one for collectors looking to complete collections or add to them.

This may be better if it was in the Collectors Corner, I'm not sure.

I don't want this to become a selling thread.

If there is a bottle someone has in their collection that someone else would like let the PM each other by all means.

I would love to add to my Redbreast collection, in particular the 10 year old.

I would also love to get a bottle of Jameson 7 year old. If anyone has one to spare.

I have some bottles that I would swap or part exchange if anyone is looking for them.

I'll try to put in a link that will direct you to my collection.

I'm looking for Old Comber 7 or 10 year olds, Allman's, DWD, or Brunsa.

I have an interest in any closed distillery as long as it is PPS.

After a recent discovery of an old medicine bottle with a Nicholas Devereux label, I hope some day one will surface with it's original contents intact. It too was a PPS but not mentioned on the label.

I'd need one as well, so we'd better hope for a case. Make that two, one to try, one to hang on to.

Hi Joel,

What closed distilleries have you managed to find bottles for to date?

Bow St.
John's Lane
Tullamore
Middleton & North Mall (Cork Distilleries 7 y.o. blend, not sure if there really is any North Mall in it yet...)
Nun's Island
Possibly Jone's Rd. (bottled by Averys - investigation continues...)

No. I always wondered about the on the Whisky Exchange had. When they sent me more pics it became clear that it was in better shape than the shot on the web site made it look. Good seal, and enough of the lable left to make it obvious. I don't know when I shall open it -- some day though. I was going to add a pic, but I need to shrink it. Later...

Nice find Joel.

I remember reading about a bottle from Nun's Island that fetched a crazy price at auction a few years back. It must have been like that Only fool and Horse's final episode when they hit the big time at an auction with an item they had in storage.

It never fetched a crazy price but they were asking for one.

Yes it was never sold, pie in the sky stuff really. It seems a wine retailer with a half decent selection of whiskys took it upon himself to value it at £100,000 stg. It got massive media attention but was never going to sell for that money. Another in better condition popped up shortly after and was put into auction and did not even hit it's reserve which was a few thousand. About a year ago one went at auction for under £800 (I think) before fees. And of course the one in Whisky Exchange which was advertised for circa £900-1000.

It is always the case though a bottle pops up creates interest then a few more suddenly appear and the price slums drastically.

I wonder if the one at auction was the same as the one I got from the Whisky Exchange, I asked if they knew any of its story and they said no, they'd got it at an auction.

Sorry Joel your one is definitely not the bottle in question as i still have hard copies of the article
and the label on that one was in good condition.First reported in the Irish Mirror on a bad news day
12.7.2005 and hyped after that as the Sky was the limit during the Celtic Tiger years.

The Whiskey expert Kenneth Thomas who has a Whisky speciality shop in Swindon, England was reported
as saying he thought it was initially worth 30,000 Euro but then realized 'it was worth a staggering 140,000
Euro'
What a load of Tosh !! A bit like the Bulgarian apartments that were being flogged off here at the time.
It also meant as a result of this article and it being taken up by other papers that people holding 1 or 2 old bottles
simply had totally unrealistic expectations until the Tiger crashed and burned :!:

Ally from the Celtic Whiskey Shop was asked about it on a radio show. He estimated at the time that it was worth €5,000 at most. Still a very nice bottle to have, of course.

Hard to even say was it worth 5,000 but prob. near the mark. The advertising for the auction and the
fact that internet bids can now come in live give would nowadays really help to achieve that price otherwise
it was up to who was there on the day , the reserve set and a person's pocket. I think (but stand to be corrected)
the record at an Auction is still around £38,00 for a Scotch some years ago.

Possibly this one

but maybe does not really count in one way as it was a one off creation sold for charity.

However I think the one you are refering to was the 1800's Bowmore that after it sold the cork fell in and the buyer still took it.

There's been a few Dalmores too that have been for sale or sold for huge money too. The fella who runs the whisky show in Las Vegas bought one, but I don't know what he paid. One of the Dalmore Trinitas bottles. The owner of the Whisky Exchange bought one too, I think.

Bowmore produces some one off bottle that failed to sell at auction recently. The 1957.

I have a G & M Glen Albyn, and possibly a Hillside available (I forget if I have more than one) if you were interested in a swap of some sort. Neither of them are great whisky, the G & M Glen Albyn is about as good a Glen Albyn as I've had, but that isn't a high bar, and hillside looks nice in the bottle -- which is the best place for it.

A friend of mine has expressed an interest in owning a Tantallus. Any suggestions on how to find an authentic one would be welcome. I've come across a lot of remakes and a lot of cases where the decanters either don't belong or have had the tops replaced with ill fitting stoppers.
