Great to see a new entry to the peated market as well as
being a tourist attraction in North Mayo. Seems that they
intend to go down the route of spiced whiskies etc. as
well. every new entrant to the market seems to be saying
though that they are aiming at the Premium and super
Premium level :!:

Seems like that section of the market is going to be getting
very crowded in 3 /4 years time.

Your right. If a shop only sells caviar and not bread and butter it won't survive. The premium whiskey section in Ireland is getting to expensive. I find myself looking elsewhere.

I do hope they succeed. The more the merrier. It will be good for tourism in the area too.

"Premium"? That used to mean Lagavulin 21, 70's Ardbeg, or Black Bowmore. God be with the days you could get a bottle for STG£100.00 ;)

here here, Luke. Unfortunately, now it means something closer to non-age statement Ardbeg, Non-age statement Macallan and whatever super-special-ultra-premium sweet but flat young malt in a sweeter flatter wine cask the industry can hock off onto its customers for dishonest money. Plus VAT.

Too true. They've seen the hole in the market, but is there a market in the hole?

This thread is gone way off topic. I hope anyone from the Mayo distillery doesn't take offence with our rant about premiums. None is directed towards you. We all hope you do well and succeed. It's great for the industry and for rural Mayo in general.

Premium is fine if it's premium, I suppose. They'll all have to sell their whiskey at a price people are prepared to pay, in the end of the day.

Totally agree with you Willie. Best of luck to the lads in Mayo and, if nothing else, i'm glad to see more peating coming back into irish whiskey. Personally, what i'd love to see would be a peated Single Pot Still, as that's something unique that none in Islay or Midleton is ever going to produce.

I wish them and the area well. Having strong connections in the area I was very excited to hear about this and instantly liked the location, idea and name....not entirely convinced on the mock up bottle on the website but maybe that will evolve.

What does not convince me is the price! In an interview the
Founder is on record as saying that the entry level for a standard
Bottle is €80! At that price not too much of it will be sold in the
Bars of Mayo. The mini cask of spirit is definitely a great idea and
A real novelty for those with patience and no great thirst.
