Anything good in London Heathrow Duty Free?

Let's talk whiskey.

Anything good in London Heathrow Duty Free?

Postby Ace » Fri Jan 28, 2011 9:35 pm

I have a friend coming Stateside from LHR. Last time I went to LHR I brought him something from the US Duty Free store here, now he owes me.

Online, I see that LHR has World of Whiskies but their selection of Irish whiskeys is rather poor. I'd like to get something that is not really available here in the United States.

My initial thought is to have him bring me a fifth of Jameson Signature Reserve (29 pounds Sterling). I tend to prefer Midleton's fruits over the rest; my go-to drams are Powers Gold Label and Jameson 12yr. However, if there was something else that stands out I'm very open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

Ace

Tell him to go to terminal one if he has the time.
World of Whiskies is there (ignore the duty free shops, which have WoW sections - they have their own shop down near the bottom of the concourse past the pub).
They keep their stock updated here - http://www.worldofwhiskies.com/
You're not going to find anything especially good in terms of Irish, though. They have barely the standard ranges. No Bush 21, no Jameson Gold, very little Cooley when I was last there. But they do have some great Scotch options.
When I was through earlier this month, I picked up a Glenfarclas 21 yo for £41, and a litre bottle of Bunnahabhain Cruach Mhona for around £60. And I picked up a 36 year old sherried Strathisla which was very reasonably priced. There are always specials in the shop and it's worth his asking the knowledgeable staff, especially the little bald man, as he spent decades in the whisky industry.
They usually have some nice single cask independent offerings at a decent price too. And there'll likely be some travel retail exclusives.
And remind him to actually inform them their Irish whiskey selection is abysmal. They know this, but the more customers who tell them, the more inclined they'll be to change.

Thanks for the advice, I will ask him to drop by Terminal One if he has time.

That is a shame. I have yet to develop a taste for Scotch (and I've tried quite a few) so I was really hoping to get an Irish that was not readily available here in the States. The WoW website is showing that they have Jameson Signature Reserve so that is currently on the top of the list.

It's travel retail only, so only available in airports, but I never thought much of it to be honest.
