i am kind of having my last few nights at home, so i gave myself a bit of home threat

started with Midleton 1985

and now i am going to compare ;
Jameson 12
Jameson 12 Midleton Distillery reserve (second last edition 3136 1320)
Jameson 12 Bow street Distillery reserve (current edition L732431109)

and maybe a few other

That reminded me... I never opened my Midleton Distillery Reserve. Fixed now. First time I've tried it. Definitely a Jameson but it has a soft, furry mouthfeel. It makes like it's going to supply a punch but then melts into a long, very slightly woody finish. I like it.

i had a bottle bought on ebay a few years ago, because i never wanted to open a bottle with my name on it, and i just had a bottle as present for someone who never got it so i opened both

i have some green apple nose and taste on the Bow street reserve (not sure if it is different from the Midleton reserve) but i will compare these 2 as well, but the older version of the Midleton reserve is way different, a bit sweeter and not as woody on the finish
the standard Jameson 12 is very heavy on the nose compare to the other 2, dry sherry taste

good to see the differences, what i did not think is this much

i just realized that i have a bottle of Jameson 12 from 2010 and 2007

everyone was talking about the Redbreast 15 first and second batch

well, if yous get a chance to try this 2 side by side, than you will see more difference than you would think, in favour of the 2010

Oh, i didn't realise posts were altered on forums in that way.

I can only speak for myself and my posts were all genuine and honest and not a way of boosting my post count.

Was not meant as a critism and all posts are taken as being genuine otherwise they will be deleted(which very rarely happens). We try to keep editing to a minimum but I have gone over this thread in particular. It's no big deal and I've done it myself but just trying to it tidy. Just something I noticed over the last while and maybe people will keep it in mind when posting. Conversly if you have a very large post it is no harm breaking it up into 2 or even 3 posts especially if you are covering various whiskies.

Hi John , - very impressed with it - for a supermarket branded whiskey it's just exceptional - I've given a few bottles to friends in Germany as presents and they couldn't believe how good it was - so much so that one guy who I regularly bring blackbush too wants to change his order to it. So a few trips to Newry will be needed . I've tried lots of the Cooley offerings and this has to be in the my top 2 .

Today I tried the Inis Turk Beg. Quite nice and very well presented. Still, too expensive for a drinking whiskey, I think.

It would be worth grabbing all the 1st release bottles that you can find - code is L10123. Because the 2nd release - code L10218/48 is not quite the same. The 2nd lacks the richness and complexity and has that hint of 'baby sick' ( this isn't bad in itself ) which is absent from the 1st. Don't get me wrong, the 2nd is still a fine whisky - just not the award winner that the 1st is. I posted this before but to show the differences the 1st release is the one on the right.

Michael Collins 40%. A Cooley single malt but not recognisable as one, something missing....and something added. Shame.

I was going to say that to you, but didn't want to put anything into your head. I am not sure what caramel tastes like in a whiskey, but having tried this, I was guessing that there was some in this.

Caramel colour is ok in blends, it flattens out those 'wild' grain notes but in a malt it's a shame. I just love Cooley malt and it's just that that i want in my glass. Interesting to note that the light and fruity Cooley doesn't take to added colour, as i always suspected it wouldn't.


Redbreast 15. A great nose, i could nose this all day long. Thanks again John. There is an exotic fruit on the palate, passionfruit, or is it guava?


Old Comber 7 pps. Wow, different. A confusing nose consisting of unripe fruits such as apple and banana bound together with a sweet vanilla. A 'weak bourbon' nose. Turpentine and menthol on the palate, soft though, mixed with other soft volatiles. A full bottle would be required to suss this one out properly. An experience.

Bowmore 25yo ... a typical Bowmore but much more umph than I would have expected from a malt this age which is good, kind of reminds me of how great a HP 25yo is, and of course this Bowmore is more complex than a younger Bow with much bigger flavour profile, great dept and a long finish.

McCarthy's Oregon Malt, an American malt made with Scottish peated barley. And made well, also has a welcome unpredictable complexity to it.

Really like the McCarthy's. We had it at our American tasting last summer, an interesting change of pace from the bourbons. As I recall, it's VERY smokey, quite young, and made with Scottish malt, but its quality certainly belies its age.
I'm at the other end of the spectrum myself tonight. Glenfarclas 21 yo - a true sherry monster. Sweet, delicious and mouth coating.

Revisited Bowmore 25yo which @ 43% actually feels like possibly 46%.

Plenty of sweetness here but not straight sweetness because as well as toffee their is also burnt sugar and chocolate liqueur flaovours. This probably only needs another 10-15 years to make it perfect, hence the 9/10 mark

Now on to a Tyrconnell 17years and 6 months old This is at cask strength and really stands up to the Bowmore 25 ... I know one is cask strength the other isn't but even so who says Irish can't stand up to Scotch ... I know I'm repeating myself here but I feel I have to to dispell the myths generated by both sides of the Irish/Scotch debate. Anyway way this is typical Tyrconnell but just bigger Plenty of the usual fruit but the extra abv seems to only bulk the whiskey up in viscosity rather than over the top alcohol power. Possibly a bigger spice bust too. This is a beautifully balanced malt and virtually a palate clenser. Quite yummy. Another 9/10 bacically for the fact that this is not an any time dram as I need to be in the mood to have such a fruity sweet dram. However one thisng is sure Cooley malt is aging very well

Ok, i'm starting early tonight - too many bottles with a wee drammie left. Dun Leire 8 "The Original". I suppose i/we was/were expecting a bit much for a repeat performance on this with the quality of the L10123. It's a pity it wasn't achieved as this is simply stunning ( for the money ), but to be fair they have come close.

Guys, whats the Irish for "wee drammie"?

Ah, no conclusions then.

Caol Ila 25 BF h/h 5388 54.1%. Another bottle finished off.

Cooley 13 Cadenhead's 60.6%. Another bottle finished off. I took a sample first though, for later in the year.
