What are you having yourself?

Let's talk whiskey.

Very nice, Zoltan.

It's a lovely one. I decided to have a sup now and it's great. You'd think it's pure pot still. Not too far off anyway.

Oh, I was talking about the blend...

Is the 1973 like the Midleton 25?

Those Old Middleton look fine indeed. For me it's a Tullibardine 1988 46%. There nothing wrong with this whisky at all, no faults to report, it is however a bit dull, lacking complexity. Saved by a big earthy barley.

Yes, I was talking about the blend. Never had the 1973, only the Midleton 25 (also distilled 1973, though).

the way i was a bit disappointed with the Dungourney...

i just having my 5th glass of this 1973 Midleton, and i have to say this is a real cracker,

and as the big boss said;

"drink it at full strength and at body temp for the most startling and memorable effects, I have no idea how much this cost, but if you can find one and afford it ... then buy it!!"

he is damn right

i am so happy i have opened this today, should be done a long time ago...

20th anniversary coming up

Just did a quick JW flight ...

JW Black, Green, Gold & Blue ...

The results are not conclusive as I looking for a bit of a kick in my whiskey and I was surprised that the did not fare well ... maybe it was form but that is the way is it not ..

Anyway

Top of the pile tonight was Blue by a mile ... what a wonderful flavoursome and expressive whisky and an amzing long finish.

Next was Green again for expressive rich flavours with a good dollop of spice.

Black next and then gold which I found surprising as I really like gold but head to head against the others it is too smooth and for my form tonight not doing much for me ... and excellent range to be quite honest though.

Been starting at a computer screen all day (well, that's not so strange) but a whiskey is sounding really good right now. Maybe an Irishman SIngle Malt while watching House. Off I go...

The slightly odd Bruichladdich X4+3. Interesting if nothing else.

Talisker 57 North. The best of the standard Taliskers.

Is this in the shops now, or do you have to get it in duty free?

It's in the shops and generally easy to get hold of. I'm not keen on a lot of Diageo standards as they're too heavy on the E150 - i'm quite sensitive to it it seems. The Talisker 10 is one of the worst. The Talisker 57 North is 57% and has much less of the E150 effect - it's a good Talisker.

A 25yo Cask strength Glen Elgin distilled in 1984.

Seems quite light for a cask strength whisky but an easy relaxing dram ... it is scottish after all.

On the Laphroaig triple wood.

Luke warned me it wouldn't last long, once opened.

He's not wrong.

Where did you pick up the triple wood Laphroaig, even the distillery is sold out?

Started with a Marfield only 20% and quite dissappointing on taste but a very interesting and intense nose.

Next a Benraich 23yo cask strength ... really only had a tiny sip of this and really promising. The flavours came across rich.

However I was in a rush to taste the Ardbeg Corryvreckan as this is the distillery I love to hate.

Well what can I say what a monster of a whiskey and I totally love it. I can get some of the ardbeg taste that dissagrees with me but in this case it is not an off note as it is balanced by what I am guessing is a sherry matured part of the whisky. A powerful but rewarding whisky.

This is what I plan on opening when no.3 is born in December - I went out for the previous 2 - that isn't really practical this time.

Laphroaig night.

I've started with the Quarter cask which I use as my benchmark for Laphroaig. Now I'm on to the 15yo before I finally open the 18yo I bought some time ago. May then have a 25 or head to bed.

What's that then - something you made yourself or the Tyrconnell 17.5?
