DWD whiskey

Postby Johnhk » Mon Oct 18, 2010 2:02 pm

I have in my possession a bottle of DWD whiskey. I wonder can anyone point me in the right direction to get information on its history?

Nutshell History

DWD is the abbreviation of Dublin Whiskey Distillery Company Ltd. And was located in the Jones Rd Distillery in Dublin. Established 1873 and closed in the 1940's ... possibly 1945. It was considered one of the Dublin big 4 .... the power house distilleries of the Irish DIstilling industry. In this grouping you also have Powers, John Jameson & lesser know William Jameson (Closed 1920's) . It amalgamated with WIlliam Jameson and Geo Roe (another Dublin Distillery) to form DDC Dublin Distillers Company ltd. However all continued to bottle under their own names which is probably why they did not survive. The Jones Road Distillery was the last to close with the othe 2 closing in the 1920's.

It would be very interesting to see a picture of this bottle and we may be able to date it for you.

There's a nice bit about the Jones Road Distillery in Alfred Barnard's The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom.

I know someone who lives on the site of the old distillery and is desperately looking for a bottle, so if you happen to be selling at some stage, I'll send you his details.

Has anyone ever seen a bottle of DWD on sale anywhere? If so, where?

You really need to be on the constant look out for bottles like this. These come up fairly rarely and usually don't hang around too long.

The few I've seen have usually sold Privately and one through The Whisky Exchange (If I remember correctly). other than that you have to check Whisk(e)y auction sites though I yet to see one go through one of these but that's not to say that they haven't been ...

On a side note, it will be possible to view the old DWD building during Open House weekend in October:
