What's your latest whiskey purchase?

Hi all,

Money is VERY tight! So, all I bought was one bottle of (on sale in NH) JAMESON 12 ($30.99 no tax) and a bottle of POWER GOLD LABEL (on sale $18.49 no tax). I wish REDBREAST or THE IRISHMAN were on sale again. I now have eleven UNopened bottles and about six or seven open bottles. About three or four empties.

Picked up a bottle of Red Breast in World of Whiskeys, Gatwick on Monday and because I pre-ordered, I got a miniture of Bowmore single malt with it as well. Since I was there with millions of bottles to chose from, I picked up a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 year old too.

Had the day off yesterday so of course I stopped by the shop.

Finnegan 8yr blend, $25
Black Louth 8yr single malt, $30
Knappogue Castle 1995, $45
Black Bush, $38
Clontarf Classic Blend, $22
Powers Gold Label, $22

Also picked up a 1L bottle of Woodford Reserve for $39. Not sure I like that one enough to buy it again.

lucky SOB. PA liqour stores have 18yo lap for $65....sounds like a steal. $45 for standard 10yo

^^ Speaking of PA liquor stores, I just received my order of two bottles of Powers 12 yr. They shipped it to the store closest to me. Had to pay $5 to ship and PA sales tax but in the end, $40/bottle isn't that bad for Powers 12yr, which I cannot find anywhere locally (even outside of PA).

not bad at all ace, considering i paid around 40euro for a 700ml bottle in ireland. bottles in the states are 750ml. if you like powers 12, try tullamore 12 and jameson 12...both are awesome in my opinion

^^ I heartily agree, especially after trying it on Friday night. My "usual" is Powers Gold Label so I enjoyed the 12yr appellation very much. Too bad I can't find it in-store, it appears my only option is to mail order thru the state-owned stores.

brettie, I hear ya on Jameson 12 yr and Tully 12. I am having trouble finding Tullamore Dew 12yr in state stores here but they have the 10yr on the shelves most of the time.

Had a taste of that in the Celtic Whiskey Shop yesterday and it's very nice.

Picked out the Powers 12 and after a taste of the Irishman 70 was persuaded to buy that too but was tempted to get the Kilbeggan above instead of the Locke's but decided that the IWS couldn't be wrong!

I recently tried my first glass of Maker's Mark and fell in love. It's not my favorite whiskey, by any means; however, it's enough to make me go out and purchase the stuff. It's very bold yet very smooth and I enjoy it over a few ice cubes while I'm eating a nice steak dinner. Many of my friends aren't crazy about the taste of Maker's Mark, but I enjoy it. . . although it's obviously not Jameson (my favorite whiskey).

My sister surprised me by bringing over a bottle of Millar's (70 cl) the other day. I didn't think that was generally available here state-side. Tasted it last night and it's a definite thumbs up, which is surprising for me because I'm generally not a Cooley man.

Millar's is quite different from the other Cooley blends, to me anyway, and the only one I like to be honest.

Been quite a while since I bought any whiskey and stocks got dangerously low!
So last week I invested in:
Two bottles of the Tyrconnell Mallorcan finish
Yamazaki sherry finish (scrummy - heavily sherried, reminiscent of Aberlour A'Bunadh)
Writers Tears as an everyday drinking potstill alternative to Black Bush
Kilbeggan Distillery Reserve first rotation for the cabinet
and a Glendronach 17 year old 1993 bottling for the nipper's 18th.
Hoping to get a Premier Crew from the society soon too, or maybe more than one!

I picked up a few bottles recently while working on the last tasting... a Writers Tears, an Irishman Single Malt and a set of three Connemara minis (another Glencairn! I have enough to start my own society now...).

And I came into possession of a Bushmills 10yo last weekend so I'll be able to do a head-to-head with The Irishman Single Malt.

Bought the Tyrconnell fancy cask today. Very nice. Much nicer at the lower abv, for me. Very unusual too. Fruity.

I think you'd love it, actually. And it's an exceptionally good value dram for the price.
I found the 10 yo Yamazaki to be very estery for my palate, full of green apple flavours. But this is a heavily sherried job - spicey, winey and sumptuous. It's reminiscent of the Aberlour A'Bunadh in its sherry character but goes a half-step further along that road, producing an almost cognac-y tannin quality on the finish.
At the price point in Dublin, it is very good value indeed, especially for a Japanese dram which tend, due to production costs and import costs, to be prohibitively pricey.
