I thought I had a great bargain last night - giftsdirect.com were listing 12yo Greenspot which normally retails at €850 for just €80. I immediately ordered 2 online. Got an e-mail confirmation.

Surpise surprise I got a phone call this morning to say they were out of stock.

The moral is, of course, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Stock up on your Powers now

Powers €17.99

Apologies to anyone who saw an earlier version of this post. The Vom Fass shop on South Anne Street in Dublin hasn't yet got a spirit licence - it is selling wines and liqueurs up to 20% ABV in strength - but its sister shop in the UK is offering 4 and 8 year old Irish single malts.

Vom Fass is a "bottle shop", similar to ones I've seen in Germany. They have vats of different liquids - alcoholic drinks, olive oils, vinegars - and they will fill a bottle. The bottle costs extra but you could bring it back for a refill.

I'm not sure whether the malt is from Cooley or Bush.

If you subscribe to the Celtic Whiskey Shop newsletter you probably know he currently (as of 16 June 2010) has Crested Ten for €23 something and a tenner off the Tyrconnell 17 year old at just under €70.

Bargain Alert for those who do not have this book.

Currently on offer in Easons

The Whiskeys of Ireland - Peter Mulryan (O'Brien Press) €6.99

A great bargain and a great book to have in you whiskey library, probably one of the best all round concise books on Irish Whiskey. Easy to read and a bit of everything

I presume it is nation wide as they have about 10 of them in the Galway branch.

Hi David, if you can't get it in Dublin I'll pick up a copy for you ... And others if they want it. €6.99 is a great price , originally 24 or 25 euro
and as you say it may not be in print ... And if it is reprinted it may well be a soft back next time. Nice book all round even with big pictures for those of you who can't read ;)

Hi IWC, I have tried 3 Easons in Dublin, including the big one, without joy. If you are passing the shop in Galway (and really, only if it's no inconvenience at all), I'd very much appreciate a copy.

The Celtic Whiskey Shop is selling the Redbreast 15 year old PPS for 74.99 euro, that's a significant drop in price.
