Other guitarists I'm really into at the moment:

John Doyle - Trad, ex solas, a couple of solo albums and records now with Liz Carroll the fiddle player. Totally baffled by what he's doing most of the time. He was replaced in the group Solas by Donal Clancy for a while - see above.

Jerry Douglas - not really guitar - he plays dobro - Union station, solo and also on that transatlantic sessions thing - amazing player.

And, believe it or not, Paul Brady on the trad album he recorded with Andy Irvine many years ago - some very complicated and interesting stuff going on there.

And yes, Oops I did it again is from that.

A lot of great finger-pickers come to mind but here's one:
Tommy Emmanuel

My first job was in a supermarket where the same damn tape played on a loop day in day out. There is only one of those tracks that I don't hate to this day. In fact, the more I listened to Stanley Jordan playing Eleanor Rigby, the more I liked it.

Very good. I like Classical Gas - had never heard of this guitarist, though.

Isn't Classical Gas on some ad at the moment.

Funny you mention that - I've started trying to learn Classical Gas this week - it's about time I learned another style.

I was thinking some more about the unique voice thing - it's interesting to look at the players people try to copy when they're learning. I'm thinking Kurt Cobain and Neil Young here - neither technically great guitar players but both probably have or have had millions of teenage boys trying to learns a few riffs - again - a unique sound!

Here is a very rare live recording of Joe Cooley the famous accordionist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGzJdoMeoQY

Tony MacMahon knew he hadn't long to live so he organised this session, it was in a pub very near to you Adrian (IWC) in fact.

Here's MacMahon himself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdXRX9VEqaQ a great box player though disliked by some for his 'purist views' on traditional music. Personally I have a lot of time for him and his music, although not for the Noel 'The Pogues are destroying trad' Hill. In a great move of course the Pogues then named a piece after Noel 'Planxty Noel Hill' on a later album.

Not sure I agree Cathach. I don't believe the Pogues have done anything for traditional Irish music; they have however done a fair amount for Irish folk music. Having seen a Liam Clancy tribute recently and having endured a makey-upy version of 'The Parting Glass' sung by Shane MacGowan at the event sometimes I wonder how they managed to make the contribution they did to be honest. That said, some of their music is good and I rate 'Rainy Night in Soho' very highly.

Oh I'd agree with you as well John, but a lot of people come to Irish music through the Pogues, which is no bad thing. From an interest in rock and 'indie' music to punk by the Pogues, I went on to Seamus Ennis, Finbar Furey, Paddy Tunney, Joe Heaney and so on....

Eventually this will have the entire Irish Traditional Music Archive available on-line for free.

That's a nice find Adrian. At the moment it would appear to be aimed at the trad musician rather than a more general audience, so I'll happily spend a few hours trawling through it. It's a wonderful resource for those looking for the original scripts for tunes that may have 'evolved' over the years :D
Cheers,
J.

Found this, a satirical song and very well made video from Limerick on the fate of a former govt. minister. Safe for work I think although the language is slightly 'ripe' but authentic in places. I suppose it all depends on what where you work is like.

As a folkie i was surprised i enjoyed this pop-folk band, but their first album is fantastic, if a little melodramatic. Mumford and Sons.

People are always saying Rumer sounds like this singer or that. I reckon she sounds like Rebecka Törnqvist:

I saw Rebecka live back in the day. 15 years ago now, that would be.

When the banjo gets in your blood there it stays. I have a gorgeous Deering Calico Tenor.
