Show off your collection

Postby IrishWhiskeyChaser » Wed Apr 22, 2009 11:42 am

Feel free to list your collection here, whether it is a closed collection or what is in your whiskey cabinette and open for drinking it does not matter.

Just good to see what people are into 8-)

I'll start off with what I am currently sampling from my drinks cabinet. The following may seem excessive for a drinks cabinet but I do find it hard not to open a bottle when I buy  and secondly it is great to have such a choice at home and pick a whisk(e)y to suit a mood. However it has taken a good few years to build up this stock and no I don't knock back a bottle every night  ANd anyway I know some who have more open so that lets me off the hook :P

I haven't done a proper inventory since last year. So this is off the top of my head, and I'll amend it later when I finally go and rummage in the kitchen.

Open: Redbreast 12 yo
Lagavulin Distiller's Edition 17 yo
Highland Park 16 yo
Jameson Signature Reserve
Edradour Tokaji Finish (pure muck - should throw it down the drain really, but the Mrs dabbles in it occasionally)
Generic bourbon for cooking, marinading and for placating the Mrs

Closed:
Bushmills 16 yo
Bushmills 21 yo
Bushmills 5 yo
Bushmills 1608 Anniversary edition
Bushmills Millennium Malt
Bushmills Millennium Malt cask strength
Bushmills Bourbon single cask (3 different ones)
Bushmills Sherry single cask (2 different ones)
Bushmills Rum single cask
Bushmills 1930s bottling
Black Bush late 60s/early 70s bottling
Bushmills 1960s bottling (2 different ones)
Midleton Rare 2007 edition (x 2)
Midleton VR Single Cask (x 2)
Midleton VR Suddeutche Zeitung bottling
Old Comber
Dunville's VR (1920s bottling)
Redbreast 15 yo
Green Spot
The Irishman Single Malt
Jameson Distillers Reserve
Jameson Gold
Jameson Millennium 15 yo PPS (x2)
Jameson 15 yo PPS 80s bottling
Jameson 1780 12 yo reserve
Jameson Marconi bottling
Greenore 15 yo
Connemara Cask Strength
Connemara Sherry Cask
Tyrconnell Barack Obama inauguration bottling
Tyrconnell 90s bottling gift pack
Podhreen Mare
Henry Downes
Knappogue 1993
Knappogue 1994 (x 2)
Knappogue 1995
Couple of old Tullamore Dews from the 60s or 70s

Glenfiddich 15 yo Solera Finish
Aberlour A'Bunadh
Bowmore Mariner 15 yo
Feis Ile 7 yo Islay independent bottling (must check what this is again)

In addition to the above, the Mrs also has a few bourbons in the house I don't tend to bother much with. And there are about 20 Irish whiskey miniatures, some of them quite old, in a box somewhere too. And I have three bottles of Antrim poitin in which I am macerating berries - one blueberry, two goji berry.
I imagine I may be forgetting one or two. I'll come back and edit later. But that's what I recall off the top of my head.

Postby jcskinner » Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:36 pm

Ooh, I envy you those early Knappogues. I'm a big fan of the Bushmills versions, but I hear great things about the Cooley output too.

After a quick rummage, I managed to name that random independent Islay bottling as the Alembic Special Islay Malt, and also found a Cadenhead's bottling of a 14 yo Glenfarclas, a bottle of the shortlived Redbreast blend and a couple more Bushmills single cask bottles. There's probably still one or two missing from the list as I can't get to the back of the cupboard.
Like Adrian before me, I also have to say that I know it looks excessive, especially in these straitened economic times, to have so many bottles of whiskey in the house.
But in my defence, I'd have to say that I came into possession of quite a few of those from my Old Man, especially the some of the Bushmills bottles. And who's to say in these turbulent times of stock market fluctuation, bank crashes and asset bubbles that collectible spirits aren't as sensible an investment as anything else?
To me the bottles I have are more than an investment and more than a collection and in one sense more than mere whiskey, though.
In the end, some of the bottles I have because they are investment opportunities, and others I have to complete collections. But the bulk of them I have because I intend to drink them, alone or among friends, and enjoy the sensory experience of doing so.

Blair Athol
Glenlossie
Loch Dhu

Tobermory
Tormore

I'll be over later ;)

The Loch Dhu 10yo is that the infamous Loch Dhu ... collectable purely for it's unpalatable-ness seemingly

That 30 yo Campbeltown sounds intriguing, Michael. Can you tell us anymore about it?
And have you ever sampled the Meagher Moondharrig? Do you know who distills it?
That gives me an idea for a tasting night, actually. Between the Podhreen Mare and the two Waterford blends, we've got the bones of an Irish pub own blend night.
Are there any more pub own blend or own bottle whiskeys in Ireland, does anyone know?

And have you ever sampled the Meagher Moondharrig? Do you know who distills it?

Well, let me refer you to an old post on the Yahoo Irish Whiskey group!
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/irishwhiskey/message/1090
(and from a later post and relating to the photo reposted by Adrian - "The observant will note that its bottled in a Kilbeggan bottle, that there is no "proof/%alcohol" statement and that it doesn't claim to be
Irish Whiskey
"

That 30 yo Campbeltown sounds intriguing, Michael. Can you tell us anymore about it?

Well, now! This was bought at Christmas in Allys (€59 or thereabouts)- Having tasted the 25yo in 2003, I had to try this one.
A few years ago (2003) at a Celtic tasting in Dawson Streat, David Stirk opened a bottle of Campbeltown 25yo. I kid you not, but a few seconds after Ally popped the cork the other side of the room, this incredible aroma filled the room. I got a bottle of it that night before the shop closed. That 25yo contained "'roughly 70% malt, and 30% grain whiskies. The Grain Whiskies include: Invergordon 1977 (the youngest of the group), the legendary Dumbarton 1962, and Lochside 1962. The Malts include: Springbank 1969, Glenfarclas 1970, Balvenie 1968, Tamdhu 1971, Ardbeg 1969, and Glenlivet 1972." Well, the 30yo is a similar blend, but 5 years older. Sadly, the intense aroma is gone and one is left with a very gentle blend. From http://www.bladnoch.co.uk/threads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=27254, "The 30 yo now released is made up of a couple of casks of leftover 25 yo, now obviously at least 30 yo of age, plus a cask or two of 30 yo Girvan grain whisky. The age is five more years and the malt content now 60 percent."

By the way - that same night, i.e. the David Stirk-led tasting, I had my other epiphany - a Longrow 14yo. This is/was the only whisky I have ever tasted where I could honestly say that there was peat smoke in my mouth. It was like sucking Bord na Mona's finest briquettes. I bought three bottles, sadly giving away two (to rapturous reception). I stocked up again, but despite having the same bottle no., same label etc., it was not the same whisky. This is one sad artifact of Springbank not being consistent re what goes into each batch. However, despite have some unwanted Longrow in the house, I know what my target is and will hopefully taste something similar again.
The Loch Dhu 10yo is that the infamous Loch Dhu ... collectable purely for it's unpalatable-ness seemingly

Yep, that's the one. To be honest, I never thought it that bad. However, at one of last year's tastings, I revisited it and I finally got it - very toffeeish.
Adrian, you're welcome to sample them all ...

I think the David Stirk tasting was one of the best ones I've been to, because you got to taste whisky from all over, including New Zealand, and a rum too.

The Campbeltown Loch 25 is legandary. I remember liking it a lot, but not what it tasted like.

a good few whiskey books and lots of glasses, plints, displays, lights etc.

I'll keep it in mind when I'm in that direction next. The pub does not hold normal hours and the owner is not overly keen selling full bottles. Have not had a chance to get one myself but if I manage it I'll try for a few.

Of course there may be others that'll get the chance before I do so we'll leave it open.
