I'm not qualified to say whether the Irish is correct, but I can assure you that "Irish" is always an adjective.

The difference is in which noun/noun phrase the adjective is modifying. In one case it is modifying "whiskey", in the other case it is modifying "whiskey society".

I was thinking... putting the name in Irish as well as English is redundant. How about using the Irish element to add something different, like a motto or tag line?

For example (off the top of my head):

The Irish Whiskey Society
Oideachas agus Cairdeas

(meaning "Education and Friendship")

So nothing about drinking then? ;)

Seriously though, I do like that.

I think the Claddagh-based logo is inspired.
Have a longer Lyne arm, enclose in a Zoltan's circle with Irish Whiskey Society and you get something like the one below. The hands also endorse the "Oideachas agus Cairdeas" (at least the Cairdeas/friendship aspiration) mentioned earlier.

Now we're getting somewhere ... I like the way you've incorporated the hands of the claddagh. In general I'm in favour but ....

I have 2 slight issues ...

1. Zoltans crest is good but I am still unsure as it is too similar to the Hungarian one for me. Be nice to have something even slightly different. A few more tweeks may be good.

Image Image Image

2. not being Dublin based I would like to see the Dublin dropped. Maybe we can have Eire like on our Coins in a similar text.

The claddagh is an excellent idea once incorporated into context of the whiskey society and the potstill as the heart so to speak. I'd be very positive towards that as a centre piece. SO between David Zoltan and Michael we are getting smoewhere

Which brings us on to the motto. The hands in the original Claddagh represent friendship. So maybe we could have a motto of Friendship and welcome/hospitality in gaeilge (cairdeas agus fáilte) or (fáilte agus cairdeas) which every way sounds best or something similar. Kind of fits in with the whole Irish personality & whiskey thing. Maybe a bit wishy washy but might give others something to build on.

or in Latin amicitia et hospito ;)

Is oth liom a rá naach bhfuil gaeilge liofa ag moráin daoine, go haratithe ag daoine atá thar lear, agus a rugadh thar lear.
Given that many will not have any or very little Irish, we could perhaps go for something more recognisable to those without Irish.
How about relevant phrases that people do know ...
    ól agus craic or
    sláinte mhaith
If we went for something like ól agus craic, it would be nice to use an older Irish font (cló Gaelach) with a tironian et symbol - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tironian_notes)
I too agree with dropping the "Dublin" and "the date reference" - we can bring the date back on the 25th anniversary.

Scotch makers didn't worry about recognisability when they named their products :) Nobody needs to be able to read the motto and they can look up the meaning on our site anyway. If we are going to use Irish, I say go for it, without compromise. Whiskey drinkers are smart people (there's another motto idea).

I assume the motto will be a distillation (!) of the society's mission statement, which is yet to be honed.

Once we know what elements we want on the logo we can pass it off to a designer to pull it all together in an elegant design.

I'd go with those sentiments ... I know one of our members knows a designer and they may be able to get a good deal on a professional design ... so if anyone else knows of a similarly talented person don't be affraid to put their name forward. They might even do it for free if they get free exposure associated to the logo ... just a thought.

It'd be nice to have the motto under the logo but have the logo as a seperate entity too ...

Keep the ideas flying there could be some good stuff coming out of this.

I've no idea's for a logo myself, but I figured everyone in the Society should be able to have their say on what the logo will be. Or at least give their opinion.

Anyway, all I'd like to say is I cannot stand the claddagh ring copy idea. I've always hated that thing. Don't know why. Just do. By the way, I'd be inclined to leave out the Dublin bit, I mean, the Scottish crowd don't have Edinurgh or Glasgow on theirs, do they? Same goes for the Hungarians and all the others, as far as I know.

So, that's my tuppence worth.

I whole heartedly agree Brian and that is the way it should be. I certainly don't want people thinking that they are a few trying to get their own way all the time but there is very little feed back coming let alone ideas so we are in a quandry here. The main reason I come on here all the time is just to try and keep the momentum going and the discussion alive as I have the time to do so.

Remember we have a core of 50 people but only 10 people have partaken in this discussion so what can you do.

In saying that nothing on here will be rail roaded through as we do need consensus. I'll re-champion my celtic cross design ;) and no the GAA do not have copy right design to the symbol ...

I reckon that we should have several designs and then we as a group vote on it. ANyway a designer may even come up with a totally unique design again so I reckon we will have plenty to play with by the time it comes around to making a decision.

Keep the ideas flowing

Please do, it's very important. And disagreement is vital, otherwise we will end up with a bunch of wishy-washy concepts with no way to choose between them.

Anyway, all I'd like to say is I cannot stand the claddagh ring copy idea. I've always hated that thing. Don't know why. Just do.

I feel the same way about lots of Irish-isms. They have been over-used in the cheapest way and don't acknowledge that Ireland is a modern country still generating fresh ideas.

By the way, I'd be inclined to leave out the Dublin bit

I don't think anyone will defend putting a city name on the logo.

Not a fan of Claddagh rings either. But I don't even wear my wedding band. I'd feel like BA Baracus wearing any type of jewelry.

Postby varizoltan » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:10 am

Hi all,

is there anyone in this forum know the definition of logo :?: :?: :?:

LOGO:

AN EASILY RECOGNISABLE GRAPHIC DESIGN ELEMENT, OFTEN INCLUDING A NAME, SYMBOL OR TRADEMARK, REPRESENTING AN ORGANIZATION OR PRODUCT, FEATURING NAME EMBELLISHED WITH A BIT OF COLOR, SYMBOL. IT IS A BASIS OF THE ORGANIZATION MARKETING, PACKAGING, PROMOTIONAL AND STATIONARY MATERIALS.

as most people liked my disign at the meeting, becouse it was simple and clearly understandable and i think i am not far away from the definition above and as i said that night colour can be adjusted or date or Dublin can be taken off

so i do not agree to have anything written in irish, or the claddagh design on the logo
the less we put on it the better the logo is (look at; nike, mercedes etc. all simple)
we can have mottos on the webpage in irish, what i think be better
(and if we could change the color on the top of the page from black to green, to have a kind of happy irish look, becouse i think the black need to present a funeral, and not an irish whiskey society)

whatever the logo will be, i prefer a clearly recognizable and understandable logo and whoever whereever see it let thatone have impression about it and do not get mixed up or have a freak of it :!:

i think about the claddagh, some may think we are merrying to a still, or the celtic we are part of the book of kells. :o

i do not think i am the only one who think this...

It's not black, it's midnight grey ;-)

I made the site deliberately neutral until the committee sorts out a design identity. I don't really have the time to spend on creating a temporary look for the site. This one is cool and understated, like me 8-)

I agree with both of you, firstly a big thanks to DavidH he put this site together in his own time and free of charge, so i dont really care what it looks like as long as it serves as amedium to communicate with each other.

As for the logo i still think Zoltans is excellent BUT i disagree with him on the Irish language on the logo, im not an Irishman but i think it is important that we incorporate that as firstly having Irish writing on the logo will never be seen as "tacky" but the claddah ring will be and secondly it something that we (Irish or not) should be proud of, Zoltan what would you do if everyone in Hungray started speaking English and your native language became no more! We should ne proud of the Irish routes, no matter what country we ar native of, after all this is the Irish Whiskey Society and not the Irish Whisky Society!

Michael ,you got me wrong
i stated put irish stuff on the webpage and letterheads etc, and even if the whole page available in irish i be happyest, even if i do not understand a letter from it,
but the logo is not that big and the less and understandable things we put on it is better

and i also do not think it was a fair point to mix my point with history

as a Hungarian i am doing something here for the Irish and i am NOT against Irish at all !

I don't think we really need to overly worry about this too much yet. Firstly It is obvious that not everyone is going to agree on the same design and secondly we don't have enough choice for people to choose from. What we probably should do is hand over to a design person/team to come up with a few different ideas incorporating what we have already and possibly coming up with new ideas. Then once we have a selection we can vote on one and after that majority rules. Some people may not like a goblin in the centre of the crest/logo but if majority decides that than that is the way it should be ;)

I was talking to the guy from Glenglassaugh at the recent tasting about their new logo (can't find a good image of it online though).

They managed to get a lot in there: barley, water, latin motto and a clever twist on the Rubin vase with two birds outlining a pot still.
