CWS Single Cask Bottling 2009

Let's talk whiskey.

CWS Single Cask Bottling 2009

Postby Luke Gough » Fri Nov 06, 2009 10:56 am

Re this year's CWS Single Cask Bottling:

Is there any truth to the rumour that it's a Pure Pot Still  rather than a Single Malt or Blend a la last year's (superb) Midleton?

News please!

Yes. Leo mentioned in the other thread that it's a 14-year-old bourbon cask matured pure pot still single cask.

Come to think of it, why aren't Mitchell's doing this kind of thing?

That said, if they did they'd want to be charging a smidgen less than €250.00 for a bottle of 10 Year-Old :o or €850.00 for a bottle of 12 Year-Old Cask Strength PPS.

P.S. On an historical note, does anyone out there have pictures of the old Mitchells range, i.e. Blue Spot, Yellow Spot and Red Spot?

But do we have a price for this 14yo yet ... I know it is great to see but I'm very uncomfortable with these young €200 plus single casks.

The notion that these young to midle age IDL whiskes are worth more that some much old scotches irkes me greatly.

The only reason they are rare is that IDL makes them rare yet they have probaly millions hectolitres of whiskey maturing in their warehouses ... it's the biggest con goung and it annoys me. And let it be said I don't blame Ally one bit for it either. But I supose it is a start.

I don't know for sure, but I heard it will be around the same price as the last single cask, so that's some good news.

Yeah, it's pretty nice. I'm not sure it's as good as last years blend, for me, but I like it a lot.

Funny you should say that. I've tried them both together in the last few days and I'd say last year's would be a shade ahead for me too. It's great to try a single cask pps, and it's more in the green spot than redbreast spectrum. I really really like this year's bottling, but I think the grain in last years added a little something extra, a sort of soft vanilla sweetness.

It's also interesting in the context of the general assumption that SM, and PPS are far more interesting than blends. It's always been my view that from Midleton and Bushmills this is not always the case.

Iain

Absolutely. Good whiskey is good whiskey. Pot still whiskey blends particularly well, I think.

Is the 2008 blend still available or has it all been snatched up long ago?

They have a few bottles back in the Celtic Whskey Shop again, but they're much more expensive, I think.

I opened a bottle of the 2008 Single Cask Midleton over the Christmas, as you do - great stuff!
