I'd be keen to see the Society invest in one of George Dodds' whisky nosing kits.

I'd also be interested in getting him along to speak to the society. He is a Dub after all.

George's kit has 24 aroma bottles as opposed to the 12 in that Glenfiddich kit made for the German market, though. It's a much more comprehensive kit, made by one of the world's leading perfumiers (and big whisky fan, an Irishman living in the Scottish highlands) in conjunction with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
The Glenfiddich kit is quite nice, but the aromas included are there because they are base notes in Glenfiddich rather than a wider range of whiskies. The Dodd kit was designed to cover the most common notes found in all Scotches.
Obviously, it isn't a perfect match for nosing Irish whiskeys. There is a pure pot still character for one that would not be included in the Dodd kit.
But it is most definitely the best whisky nosing kit on the market, and designed by a Dubliner too.

1 - alcohol 2 - vanilla 3 - new mown hay 4 - buttery 5 - caramel 6 - citrus 7 - decay 8 - ethereal 9 - earthy - 10 - floral (rose water) 11 - floral (carnation) 12 - fruity 13 - cut grass 14 - malty 15 - medicinal
16 - nutty 17 - peaty 18 - phenolic 19 - smoky 20 - solventy 21 - sherry 22 - spicy 23 - spirituous 24 - woody

I agree the price isn't exactly a giveaway for the average whisky drinker. But for a society like ours, I think it would be a worthwhile investment.
Anyway, we'd be buying it from our sister society the SMWS, so I'm sure in the spirit of fraternal friendship they might be amenable to giving us a discount if we asked nicely.

I have the Glenfiddich nosing kit also ...

it contains

1. Pear 2. Wood 3. Vanilla 4. Orange 5. Clove
6. honey 7. Apple 8. Nutmeg 9. Toffee 10. Leather
11. Dark Chocolate 12.Ginger

I had already suggested doing a nosing session for the society but nobody really latched onto it.
