Looking for a Peaty Smokey Whiskey

Hi,

Im an occasional tippler, and Im looking to buy a nice but not expensive bottle to have in my cupboard to tipple on a weekend night.

Im looking for something smokey and peaty and turfy. Something I can get in Molloys or in Dunnes/tescos ect as they are all close by

Any ideas and suggestions appreciated!!

Unless you are near one of the larger O'Briens you choice will be very limited.

Your best bet is something from the Connemara range of Peated Irish Single Malts, my favourite is the cask strength.

If you are lucky to spot a smoky Islay whiskey you could try Caol Ila 12 or the Laphroaig 10.

Expect to pay between €40 - €50, unfortunately these whiskies are not as cheap over here.

I may not be the right person to tell you, since I'm Greek and don't know the selection in your country's supermarkets, but if you find "The Black Bottle" I guess it will do the job. It is cheaper than most malts (since it is a blend) and it is indeed a dirty smoky peaty son of a b**** (at least the old 10y.o. I have tried). It contains malts only from Islay distilleries but from all 7 of them.

But as TheWhiskeyBro already said, don't miss the Connemara Cask Strength, you will not regret it.

Other choices: Ardbeg 10yo, Laphroaig 10yo, Talisker 10yo, Longrow CV, Benriach 10yo "Curiositas".

For reliability, Lagavulin 16 and the Lagavullin Distillers Edition
For extra oomph, any of the Bowmores particularly those with a POrt finish.
For that hedonistic moment, Port Ellen

I was never a fan of Glenmorangie myself, but that's not to say it's bad - just not to my taste. I believe they have changed it slightly since I last tasted it too. It is very slightly smokey.

The Laphroaigs are very peaty. I love them, but you have to really like peat. They are also medicinal. Bowmore is less so - mid range peatiness and floral. I'd recommend either, although some people hate Bowmore and some people hate Laphroaig.

If your travelling up North and doing, as Bertie said, the unpatriotic thing It is worth checking out Sainsbury's as well as they have a good selection also.

Got Myeslf a Laphroaig 10yr in Sainsburys at the weekend. Very tasty.

btw I saw a place in Dublin City this evening that seems to sell nice bottles, some of the above mentioned. Its opposite Trinity college on the corner. I imagine its pricey.

That's Foxes Cigar Shop, I'd say. I think the prices are in line with what you'd expect, but I am not 100% sure.

I think so. I'm pretty sure they're supplied by CWS.

They probably just have a higher exclusive whiskey to normal whiskey ratio so it may look expensive that way.

my favourite is Celtic Nations(Cooley 70% & Bruichladdich 30%)Limited Edition....
