I think we had a similar Christmas.

Tonight it's a 27yr old Cameronbridge and a 1991 single cask Midleton.
Both very good and (dare I say it) remarkably similar in some ways. That said the nose on the Midleton is far superior and the taste more complex. But great as both these are the stand out dram tonight is (purists avert your eyes) a blend of the two - approx 70% Midleton 30% CB. It's like an aged version of the Celtic whiskey shops first single cask blend. I always felt though that bourbon cask SPS was a bit one dimensional on it's own and benefitted from either a bit of sherry cask or some grain.

Sounds good Iain, and I kind of agree, have done the Midleton Bourbon casks and have had my fill it really needs a shake up ...

I got the 24yo Spey side from Aldi/ Lidl (can't remember which) and although perfectly acceptable (not great by any streatch) really improved with a 2-1 ratio to Laphroaig cask strenth

I'm 'settling' for a Jameson Caskmates at the moment, which I have to say is very moreish! My Dad is a fan too by the looks of it, so it must be in the genes!!

Cracked a new arrival today. A K&L Wines private Label Knappogue Castle 12 yr. Ex-Bourbon aged. 86 proof.

Tastes of vanilla, peach, pear, and white pepper. Its not the most comlex whiskey I've had, but it sure is delicious.

Picked up two bottles of this, one for myself out of curiosity and one for a mate who done a favour or two for me.
A glass in and its not looking like he's getting the 2nd bottle!

Much smoother/rounder than regular jameson, a lot of the bite is mellowed with a beautiful stout, almost chocolate nose.
Big round chocolate/stout flavour on first drink, but with some fruity tones coming through after a few moments and even a slight taste of spice, possibly cinnamon or clove.
Slight bit of heat after swallowing, but much more mellow than anything else ive had, and a definite big, round, smooth stout aftertaste. Just beautiful and at a hair under 40 quid, a bargain!

Jack Ryan's single malt. I remember this done very well in the Irish Whiskey awards. I got a good sample of it at WhiskyLive and really enjoyed it.

Seen this a few times and guessed a bit dull but you irked my curiosity and I bit the bullet today and purchased.

Must say quiet impressed for the price.

Plenty of smoke, a bit of iodine and quite dry. Quite silky/buttery and rich in parts. My guess a good dollop of Caol Ila.

Certainly worth a try and I think I'll be getting a replacement before they disappear, thanks GWH

Back on the Glen Marnoch Islay Edition.

Wonderful bargain basement Islay. Not perfect by any stretch but for the money superb value. Sometimes a bit watery but has what it needs, a good blast of peat and smoke, smooth and silky though, oily/buttery, sweet candy and vanilla and to finish very dry with some ash.

Tested a dram of something called Brenne French Single Malt last night. Made by a cognac producer but apparently only currently available in the US. Seemed to me to be almost more like a cordial than a whisky, and much too sweet for regular consumption. Still, an enjoyable experience.
