looks like everyone is coming out with this, some scotch is already available, and idl use a lot of virgin oak to their whiskeys, so i am not surprised if something comes out of them

hence whisky of the year in whisky bible is a virgin oak Glenmorangie from 1993, so i am sure there be more to be released from others too

by the way, i have some whiskey in Hungary in virgin oak cask

wouldnt be surprised. The Barry Crockett Legacy already has a small component of virgin Q. Alba aged pot still in it so it's not as if they havent got stocks of the stuff

I've seen on this forum a claim that the Jameson Marconi used virgin oak before the Gold, but I have no direct info on that myself.

Yes. The Jameson Gold was born of Jameson Marconi. They both contain virgin oak matured whiskey.

...in fact, I think they had the view that they didn't get the Marconi quite right, and the Jameson Gold addressed this.

I think the Marconi is a fine whiskey. Must pour a drop.

Have you any idea of what % were Virgin oak casks.

I think the Jameson Marconi was great whiskey. I also like the Gold. I can't imagine it would be cheap to produce a 100% virgin cask whiskey.

Well apparently virgin oak cask are dearer than bourbon casks so you're probably right.

I suppose the cost may also be affected by the type of whiskey that goes into the cask.

I think Luke's rumours on this may well be quite true by the way...

then again, all american bourbons do it by law so it can't be unattainable. Jameson Gold also has small amounts of trad pot in it. Does anyone know if the marconi had that too or was it a different spirit?

Logically it actually stands to reason that the Viring oak is more expensive as these are produced at a cost to the American industry then they need to off load them as used casks. Cannot see them making a profit on selling bourbon barrels.

I suppose the distillers can get an extra use out of a virgin oak in that if an Irish or Scottish distiller uses a bourbon cask twice then it's actually been used 3 times so I guess they could a virgin oak 3 timed - long term saving there.

If there's about 200 l of liquid in the cask, I wonder how much extra per bottle it would cost? Maybe not that much.

You might be able to taste some virgin oak cask Midleton if you go to the tasting in the Stag's Head early next month.
