An update to my Lot 40 experience...my next door neighbour and I had a tasting of some bottles that I had opened in March, but that he had not had the opportunity to yet try. One of those bottles was the Lot 40...this time around the fruit notes that I had picked up in the past had slid into the background, allowing the rye notes to really present themselves. Wow! It was like drinking a slice of lightly buttered rye toast...awesome stuff!

We also had Sullivan's Cove Double Cask (Australia)...luxurious fruit notes throughout...Longrow CV, Port Charlotte 'An Turas Mor'...re-confirmed that I will be purchasing another bottle before it disappears from the LCBO for good...and, to finish the evening nicely, Writer's Tears.

On seeing David's post about the prospect of a new Redbreast 21, I decided to dig out a bottle of the 15 year old. I've a few of the 2nd edition hidden away for special occasions.

This I would consider similar to the birth of a child.

Just the bog-standard yellow lable 40%. Don't buy it, it is too easy to drink. Woke up this morning and 2/3 of the bottle was gone.

Knappoque Castle 14 Years Old.
Nice, but i prefer the 16 & 17 Years Old sherry finish.
For me the 16 y.o is the best balanced one!

With all the discussion earlier about Lot 40, I found my bottle after a bit of tidying. I think they still use the same recipe in the newer one.
A unbelievable nose. It's really worth trying.

I believe the society is planning a Canadian tasting in the near future. This is certainly one worth including if it can be sourced.

Dingle newmake spirit. this stuff keeps getting better and better. gorgeous green appley aldehydic backbone to a delicate tripple distilled vanilla newmake. Brian's coming from a wine background and the fermentation smells gorgeous. Can't wait to see what this stuff is capable of as it ages. hopefully they dont f*** it up with too much sweet sticky port and px barrels for years on end...

they certainly should as it's delicious spirit. Peter and I were down there for Feile na Bealtaine and got a nice peer into the fermentation vats followed by a rather cool saxophone quartet concert in the distillery and some newmake tasting. I brought a jar of it back if anybody's dying of curiosity..

A few nights ago, but tried some Nun's Island. Great to get to try this and it's a very good whiskey. Typical of other whiskies of this era, I would say.

Nothing quite as glamorous as John, I didn't know what to try so I thought I'd try some Laphroaig, Redbreast 15(2nd batch) & Woodford reserve.
Good choices I think. I been have a love hate thing for Laphroaig for years, but I think it getting better by every taste.

Saturday night, Auchentoshan Valinch and Longrow CV. The Longrow was a blind pour done by my wife from my 36 or so open bottles. I guessed right after narrowing it down in my mind to the Longrow and McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt. There is a distinct anise/licorice aroma at the forefront (so far) of my Longrow CV bottle, which settled the correct guess.

I've haven't had a drop for a week. Tonight I opened a bottle is Irishman cask strength. Nice drink, but not a patch on the society CS.

I assume it's a CS blend but not sure. I'm getting North & South from it. What is the make up? Does anyone know?

Depends what you mean by "blend". I don't believe that company has ever put grain spirit in its whiskeys. I expect it's a blend of pot still and malt whiskey though.

Dark Horse from Alberta Distillers. A very nice Canadian Rye which means quite a bit from me as I generally don't like Canadian whisky. Just back from a Condo meeting so I'm firing for effect.

In the last week:
- Collingwood and Lot 40 to celebrate the London (Ontario) Knights winning the Ontario Hockey League title for Junior Hockey,
- Lagavulin 16 to finish a bottle
- Laphroaig Quarter Cask from bottles that are held by both myself, and my next door neighbour friend.

Edit to add that my largely teetotalling mom had a small pour of Writer's Tears (she, as a high school English teacher, appreciated the inspiration/marketing for the bottle) when she visited this past Saturday. After the shock of the initial sip (the initial alcohol effect), she enjoyed it enough to finish a 1/2 oz. pour.

My Writer's Tears bottle is now almost 1/2 gone, in only two months or so...a repeat bottle is on the wishlist.

Having some Speyburn 36 Years Old Clan Cask. Seriously nice whisky. Was offered the chance to buy another bottle so took it. Although it is ca. £210 for a bottle, for a 36 years old it is great value.
