Looking to try something new

Let's talk whiskey.

Looking to try something new

Postby JakeDPR » Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:58 pm

I was trying to find reviews on the forums, and it was a bit tough. So I figured we could make a discussion of it. This list is four whiskeys I have not tried yet, and am looking to soon. I am curious of peoples opinions, so lets make a list, in the order you would buy these!

Knappogue Castle Single Malt Whiskey
Michael Collins 10 Year Old Single Malt
Jameson 12 Year
Tullamore Dew 12 Year

Here's mine for what's it worth.
Jameson 12 Year
Knappogue Castle Single Malt Whiskey
I probably wouldn't buy the others but to finish the list,
Tullamore Dew 12 Year
And finally the Collins.

Have you tried the Jameson Select Reserve , also in the price range.

I will get the 12 first. Are you not a Tullamore fan in general, or is the 12 just not much better than the regular offering? I have not tried the Select Reserve, but will keep an eye out. Is there anything else in that 40 dollar price range that I should really look for? The list I made is based on the selection at one store I frequent, but there are better selections around if something is jumping out at you as not on my list. Thanks for all the help!

How much is Writers Tears where you are? I'd rate it above the other whiskeys you have mentioned.

I have never even seen Writers Tears in my area, I live in Western MA. I will be sure to keep an eye out for it though

If they have Redbreast 12 in your neck of the woods you might try that. I prefer it to all on your list by a long shot.

Tullamore Dew 12 is imho way better then the standard but I would rather have a bottle of Redbreast either 12y or 15y.

If you See Concannon Irish whiskey it is by far one of the best valued Irish blends on the US market. Have no idea where it is available though as it may be in a very limited area in relation to the dustribution of the other Concannon Vine yard products. Cheap as chips so Worth a check though.

Was the Concannon good? I wasn't at that tasting. How was it received in the room?

Hi David, was not at it either but I donated the bottle and it's brother is in Galway well on it's way to being quenched. ;)

I'll be honest it is not flawless but the Shriaz finish is quite good which I was very surprised at. To me it is very close to the kill began blend underneath which ironically I don't like but the finish makes up for that and seems to make a better whiskey out of the Kilbeggan. Now don't quote me on the Kilbeggan bit just that I think it is a close style before the finish. However it retails for $19.95 in the States which is a steal and well worth that kind f money. I heard it actually seemed to fare well at the tasting.

Thanks, IWC. I follow Concannon on Twitter but they never mention the whiskey. I wonder if they were caught by the Beam takeover and now can't resupply.

dont bother with the Michael Collins, it's essentially an american market aimed repackaging of cooley malt drowned in bucket loads of caramel...

If you happen to come to Ontario in the near future (only a 7 hour drive - + customs - from Springfield MA, to Toronto...about 75 minutes quicker if you only go to Niagara Falls) the LCBO still has Writer's Tears in stock, for Can$48 (tax included). One of the few areas where alcohol is well priced in Ontario is with respect to Irish whiskey...now if only they could improve the selection!

Here's the current inventory listing (including a good sized stash in the neat little city of Kingston, which is at the east end of Lake Ontario, only about 5 1/2 hours from Springfield, as per Google Maps):

The wishlist is always growing...
