This whisky would most likely be a blend from both Old Middleton and Watercourse distilleries. Sample is from a 2 1/2 ounce mini at 70 proof.

Nose: malty, spirity, turpentine, sweet, industrial, black pepper, sweet, cotton candy, meaty, creamy

Colour: light gold

Body: coating,

Palate: sweet, cotton candy, icing sugar, turpentine, oil, geranium, black pepper, big old pot still, hard grain whisky .
Finish: industrial, icing sugar, grain whisky, pepper, sweet, garden shed.

A healthy dose of old pot still with the grain portion of the blend hiding in the background. Little in common with the personality-free modern incarnation. 86

As a very general observation, I find the 'cotton candy' note to come up much more regularly in Irish whiskey tasting notes (I have experienced it when I tried Jameson Gold last year). Would this be a by-product of the stills and/or the distillation process, or something else that is more commonly found in Irish whiskey?

edit to add that: 'garden/tool shed' and 'machine shop' are other notes that fall into this category as well.

Or candy cigarettes, perhaps, which I get from whiskey sometimes. I'm not familiar with cotton candy / candy floss. I must seek some out.

I think it reasonable that it might be described as candy cigarettes, bubblegum, or icing sugar.

Agreed...so maybe it's not quite as Irish-specific as I thought...however I am still curious, is it the distillation equipment, process, or other factor that might create the 'extra sweet sugar' note?

Some associate the bubblegum flavour specifically with potstill whiskey.
