Whiskey in the news

Let's talk whiskey.

Then I thought that the settlement may have been that they supplied the whiskey. I didn't want to openly ask In case it was still a contentious issue.

Has anyone tried it?

It was always Cooley supplying the whiskey for 2 Gingers. There was a separate trademark issue with Jameson related to The Big Ginger cocktail after the bar switched from using Jameson to 2 Gingers. That seemed to have been sorted out quickly anyway.

I presume the 2 Gingers brand had contracted their supply as it has quite a big and regular turn over. As the biggest growing whiskey brand in the states I think Beam see this as an opportunity to build on their Irish Whiskey profile.

Maybe it is just me but those whiskey detective guys are a little strange.

They only like Dew and Jameson Irish Whiskey...

They don't like Rye in their Manhattan...

They put ice in everything...

I know that everyone has their opinion and today most people feel the need to tell everyone about it in a blog. But I would not agree with most of what they are saying or doing.

If you are going to tell everyone what whiskey they should buy, don't have a large hunk of ice in every picture and only like the market leading brands. I can find out that information from any drinks salesman.

This is outstanding news, I wonder what the mash bill for the pot still will look like?

Good news indeed. I didn't realise Grants were putting in so much money.

I'm reading the current edition of Whisky Magazine and there's an interesting article about the renaissance of the Irish whiskey industry.
The Irish Whiskey Society get a mention too. They even write about the society bottling.

I assume it can be read on their site. The magazine is not available in shops here sadly.

I'll try copy the link but its easy it find on he site.

Meanwhile, an Irish whiskey explosion...

Good radio interview on ' The Business' with George Lee on Radio 1 this Sat.
He spoke with Jack Teeling & Oliver Hughes and Noel Sweeney about the
rapid and overdue growth in Irish whiskey sales and the prospective new
( for the Irish ) markets in Asia and Africa.

I heard that. Three heavyweights of the industry and he asked them nothing that any one of us couldn't have answered off the top of our heads. Not a sausage about their companies' plans!

The only new content was from a French Pernod Ricard guy who said Jameson was now to look at Asia, which I regard as very significant, and who mentioned opening up new African markets outside South Africa.

I agree ! That said I feel the article was more to make the general
public aware of the'Renaissance' that is happening in the industry rather
than being over specific. Rather too much emphasis on whiskey as an
investment i.e. diamonds gone up 14% over 'x' amt. of years compared
to good whiskey gone up 400% ---- reminiscent of the language of the
' Celtic Tiger ' era :!:

Page 3 of the Irish Examiner today also carries news of papers filed
yesterday in Manhattan re. alleged breach of Contract etc. Sidney Frank
Ltd. - V- Beam re. Michael Collins Irish Whiskey :!:
Will it get settled or will it make for an interesting court case :?:

Fair point. We could use a lot more public awareness of and support for this growing craft industry.

It's interesting to juxtapose that with the brief Irish Times article today noting that Slane is about to lodge a planning application for their new distillery. The Mountcharles were quite bitter when supply was cut off but they rolled with it and soon they will have their own distillery. I admire them for it.

With regard to both supplies of Whiskey in the Sidney frank case it is an alleged
breach of contract vis a vis some of the Irish based brands which I understand
were being supplied without contract on a day to day basis. It is great though to
see that a distillery @ Slane Castle is to be a runner.

I hope they get going but a lot of marketing BS in there too ...

I see my two favourite words were used again .... "Super Premium"

Slane with their premium talk and Dingle with their over inflated cask prices ... Does not bode well for independent whiskey dis tilling in my view ... Will be interesting to see how others pitch their future products.

If every new distillery tries to go the Premium route we will have a lot of casualties me thinks. At the end of the day Whiskey is a simple product and Premiumisation is just pure marketing.

100% agreement with what you say IWC!! Nobody is actually saying
'that our aim is to distill good Irish whiskey ' not super premium,
not
aged by extra oak staves put into the barrel and not a big spiel in
marketing material about auction prices and the world market in whisky sales :!:
Seems to me some of the marketing people think they are still doing property
supplement material on the latest 'Celtic Tiger' estate (C.2005)

Maybe John Major should be getting the credit in that article, rather than CJH :)

But that's a good review, straight off the blocks. Well done  I look forward to cracking one open at the society some day.
