Averys 14 Y.O. Supreme Irish Whiskey

Postby Joel1802 » Wed Oct 10, 2012 3:21 am

I recently acquired an old bottle of Irish whiskey bottled under the Averys name for the US market. I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on it such as what distillery it might be from. I believe it was bottled around 1960 and the label says Averys at the top then has a picture of a sailing ship. Underneath it says "Esquin's private selection supreme Irish Whiskey. 14 years old. bottled and exported by Averys of Bristol. 4/5 quart 86 proof. Any information would be very much appreciated. I know Averys did a number from Bow street, but those where labled John Jameson below the Averys name.

Here's one for a 40 year old pot still.

and here's one with a large price in it, it's a 21 year old:

I've came across a 7 year old before and a 17 I think.
I hope you got a good price for yours. Could be worth at least 4 figures retail.

I was fortunate enough to get it for a very good price on ebay, not even close to the price asked at the second link. I've seen the two at those links before and find the hand written DWD intriguing (first link). I am fairly certain that if it was Bow street they'd have said so given the Jameson name draws a great deal of water. There was an 18y.o. sold by the same seller at the same time, I wasn't successful in that auction, but it said Jameson on the label and was bottled for the same merchant at about the same time. I have asked Averys and they are doing what they can for me. The investigation continues...

That's not the one, there may be a 17 year old out there too. There seems to be a few various aged ones out there.

Averys Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey 7 Year Old 1950s 1960s
Averys Supreme Irish Whiskey 14 Year Old c.1951 c.1965
Averys Supreme Irish Whiskey 16 Year Old c. 1949 - 1965
Averys Supreme Irish Whiskey John Jameson 19 Year Old c.1946 c.1965
Avery Jameson 1950 33 Year Old Feb 1950 Autumn 1983
Avery Jameson 1949 37 Year Old May 1949 Spring 1987
Averys of Bristol 'DWD 40yo' 1920s 1960s

A list from my records of the Avery's I have seen over the years. A lot of casks seen to have been acquired between mid-40s & mid 50s and bottled from the 1960s onwards, as best as I can tell.

As usual if a bottle can be attributed to a distillery it is more valuable, otherwise its a blend (even if it is a rare one)
I've seen people looking for 4 figures for these before, unsuccessfully, I think the 33 & 37 year olds were expensive when released.
Avery's of Bristol were a very well known spirit merchant and had many different bottlings, very difficult to value but anything over €300 and your getting into a extremely narrow market. so $430+ was a fair price for the one attributed to Jameson, not so sure on the unatrributed one (yours I think)

Hope that helps a little...

It does help, many thanks. I'm quite sure the date on my 14 y.o. is 1960 though, are you referring to the same one? If you are how did you find out? I really do want to know where it came from, I'd start water boarding people, but I don't yet know who to subject to that treatment (call me the whisky finder general). I'm not so concerned about value, I'm enjoying the puzzle. If it is the same bottle I suppose there are six possible distilleries as I would expect them to have said if it was malt or a blend. I'd then take Jameson off that list for the reasons I give above so that's five.

Averys got back to me, they've hit a wall so I'll have to try some other possible sources. I'm very greatful for all their efforts though, they certainly did their very best to help.

That's all you can ask of them, was nice that they replied though.
