What's your latest whiskey purchase?

I got mine on ebay recently. I spoke to Fred Noe at Whiskey Live in Dublin and he recommended it. He told me to keep an eye out for Jim Beam Devil's Cut too.
I have searched around a little and found 3 distinct packaging types. The first, like mine, was all wood. The second, like yours had a plastic front cover. the more recent one I see have a hardened cardboard box. I see on whiskyauctions.com archive that they sold back in 2006. It's great stuff indeed and I will try to get a few more bottle as time goes bye.

Being the 4th of July (and myself having ties to the US), I may adopt a 'premium' bourbon/whiskey approach later today. I'm eyeing two or three of Booker's "Small Batch" bourbon, George T Stagg (2011 ed.), Old Potrero 18th Century Style Rye, Jefferson's Presidential Select 18 yo and/or Parker's Heritage Collection (4th ed.) 10 yo Wheated. We shall see what ends up in the glass (though with four of the five being over 60% abv, they may be smaller servings!)

Find the Stagg...any Stagg and enjoy! The addition of water is highly recommended to knock off the alcohol hit from the 71.3% abv of the 2011 bottling, but you don't need to add too much. The flavours hold well. The Old Potrero has now released a batch that is around 52% (I believe), down from the 60%+ bottle that I have. It definitely fits in the 'unique' whiskey experience. If you like rye whiskies, you should love this one, but get a sample first if you can.

As for this thread, I picked up a Buffalo Trace (45% abv) at the LCBO here in Ontario this past weekend for $5 off the usual price!

I'll give that Stagg a try some time soon. It sell at €140 a bottle here.

To detail further, the 2011 Stagg has beautiful notes of fresh pipe tobacco, leather, and polished wood (yeah, I thought 'polished wood...what the???' as well, but it's there (I think of oak) and it works!) that are highlighted with the addition of water (experiment on the water level to find what works for you...I added about a teaspoon to about 40 mL of spirit). Probably the most 'luxurious' bourbon that I have had in my albeit limited (about 18 months total) whiskey 'career'.

However the William L Weller was a far superior bottling for me. Not sure why but the Stagg gave me a hangover like headache no matter what I did with it. But taste wise the WLW was better too. Much more dept and more complex than the Stagg. But that's was just me and more people seem to prefer the Stagg.

Very strange though about the Stagg. One glass whether straight or watered (even half and half) was enough to bring it on and something I have never experienced with a whiskey prior or since.

The WLW on the other hand I could easily drink neat with no repercussions.

Sounds like you could be a 'wheater' rather than a 'rye guy'. The Weller uses wheat as its' primary flavouring grain in the mashbill, while Stagg has rye as its main flavouring component. Wheat is definitely a 'softer' grain. Maker's Mark (& MM46), Parker's Heritage Collection (4th edition) and Old Weller Antique 107 are a couple other wheated bourbons. Unfortunately, I have only read about the joys of the William Larue Weller...I have yet to try a taste of it...

latest additions Midleton 2010 & 2012, Powers John's Lane 12yo and the nearly sold out Yellow Spot. The Ireland allocation has been totally taken up and no more to be got so if you see it buy it.

I can't wait to crack open and try a bottle of Yamazaki 18 that I picked up in Illinois in early May. I'm trying to be good and get my open bottles down to 29 before opening another...but this one is really calling to me!

I seem to have developed a particular fascination with Japanese whisky. I love it. A few Karuizawas I've tasted recently have been disappointing after tasting many great ones, but that aside, they really produce some great stuff.

I was given a bottle of George Dickel #12 by a friend of mine yesterday as a thank you for looking after the "wildlife" (three cats, seven gerbils, two fish) at his house for the last week. He knew I had been itching to get a bottle so the gesture is greatly appreciated.

For those not familiar with George Dickel, it is the only other widely available Tennessee whisky (their spelling - by design) out there, other than the omnipresent Jack Daniels. If you are not a fan of JD, do NOT let that experience colour your attitude towards the Tennessee whisky style! Dickel #12 is simply awesome, very "sippable", whisky! Quite enjoyable on a warm summer day, with very nice, sweet, toffee and maple notes that do not overpower to a cloying level of sweetness.

Ask any of the young fellows who work in the sprits section can they order you some (asked his manager), thats what I did in my local Aldi he was very helpful but only could get a few bottles of the 8 year old Avoca even got me the specially selected 8 years old from 2008!

The Toronto get-together that I mentioned in another thread was partly to facilitate a bottle trade with someone who very kindly set aside a Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX bottle for my collection. I have loved this one when I have had a chance to sample this one in the past...beats the Lasanta by 1000 meters (to borrow and vary an Olympic theme).
