Cooley not supplying whiskey to own brands

Cooley is cutting the supply of casks to independent bottlers, shows an intent to lay down casks and produce more higher age statements. I would see this as the end for a lot of the supermarket own brand bottlings of Irish Whiskey

There's a business lesson there: get it in writing. Knappogue Castle, Irishman, Tullamore Dew, etc show you can hang in there with a good contract. It will be interesting to see who survives in the extended Cooley family.

More generally though, this is very positive for the quality of Irish whiskey. And it's another nudge for independents to set up their own distillery.

That's a shame. The Cooley-produced Avoca whiskey in Aldi is a very decent whiskey for it's price and I'll definitely be stocking up on it.

end of days for a lot of odd (albeit usually nothing special) brands. I'll miss the sainsbury single malt. still, as mentioned earlier, its an extra incentive for new distilleries to open up

Here's another take on the announcement from Oliver who isn't convinced about quality improvement and maybe I agree with him on this:

out of curiosity, since today is the 100th anniversary of the titanic's sinking... do that lot have a contract with Cooley or will Danny Boy and company need to find some other means of erm... staying afloat?

I think can only benefit the industry and quality will only get better I hope.
I too hope the ones you mentioned take note.

Tullamore is a good example of the way things are going. Hopefully there will be plenty more.
