What are you having yourself?

Let's talk whiskey.

It's damn nice stuff. I'm thinking about starting the Irish Brandy Society. Who's with me?

If we made some wash with a homebrew kit do you think they would distill it for us?

The two places that I know have it are Redmonds Off Licence in Ranelagh, Dublin, and Bradley's Off Licence, North Main Street, Cork. Where are you based? I imagine the CWS will get it in now it has just been relaunched (I looked on their site but didn't see it).

I am in Belfast so doubt I will find it anywhere up here. Ally at the CWS is prob going to be my best bet.

I completely forgot about that website. I submitted my blog there ages ago. I think it automatically republishes the first paragraph or so of whatever I post. And lots of other foodie blogs too, of course.

That's a fascinating suggestion. The stills must be silent 90% of the time. This is the Hungarian model that Zoltan told us about - the locals grow their fruit and get the local palinka distillery to distil it.

a society-recipe made whiskey would be quite the thing :) I'm surprised they havent considered grain spirits before given that, as mentioned above, fruit spirits are so season-bound. Given the rising interest in Irish whiskey and micro distilling, it might be worth mentioning at least the idea to them.

I don't think it's entirely unfeasable. Plenty people make beer at home. The wash would be the same thing without the hops, more or less. It's not quite that simple I know but...............

I think the big obstacle might be any plans they have themselves.

Actually just thought of one more obstacle. Putting it into a barrell and keeping it somewhere for a few year.

A toast to a gentleman

Postby IrishWhiskeyChaser » Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:30 pm

Raising a glass of Knappogue 1951 in memory to my uncle Willie who died this morning.

A gentleman with a great sense of humour even in the face of battling cancer.

A sad loss to our family but he went peacefully and at peace.

On the flip side a second toast to my lad who is 2 today.

A day of Sorrow and Joy all warped into one.

The end of life and the beginning of life ... just brings into perspective that life is one big circle ... enjoy it while your here

Condolences to you and your "Bro", IWC. I must say you are very eloquent at times.

I understand exactly what you mean - the loss of an older generation, be it one or two above you, never really makes sense until you start to see the generation below. I was very close to my grandparents and in some ways only really understoond why they weren't here anymore when I found out I was to be a dad for the first time.

I'm sorry to hear that, IWC and TWB. I didn't know the gentleman but I'll toast the fine sentiment, if I may.

Shouldn't really be having whiskey as I'm off work with the "manflu". That said my throat was so sore I couldn't talk so I decided to anaesthetise it with some Japanese whisky so I've had a Nikka Coffey Malt, From the Barrell and Taketsuru 17yo vatted malt.

The From the Barrell is really heavy and rich for a blend - this is becoming a regular though as it's a 500ml bottle it may not be for long.

Coffee malt a revelation - not like any column distilled whisky I've tried before - hard to tell apart from a heavily sherried pot still malt.

Taketsuru very like a Scottish sherry monster. Most Japanese whiskys I've tasted (which I'll admit is very few) are quite distinct from Scotch SM's but this reminds me a bit of something like a Blue Hanger or other sherried vatted malt.

The only cure ;)

Me? just draining a Bruichladdich WMD II (Yellow Submarine) ... glad to have this gone as it was only so so... a 14yo distilled in 1991 bottled at 46%. I presume this is a bourbon barrel and typical of Bruichladdich but for me not my bag so glad it is gone and I don't have to look at it any more :P . Reminiscent of my trip to Islay with Ally & Co.

Now for something totally different ... a sample of a port pipe matured SPS (light pot) from midleton from a trip there last year (or the year before???) ... lovely dollops of wood, wine, spice and colour this is whiskey as it should be ...for me anyway. flavour flavour flavour 8-)

There's the remains of a bottle of Lockes single Pot Still Malt, The limited edition of 5000. I noticed the scroll was signed by John Teeling. I bet that was a memorable day for him.
I guess I've increased their value if anyone is collecting them.

I've also a small amount of Woodford Reserve Bourbon to finish. I really like this stuff. There is no age statement on it but it's got a presence about it that i never found in American whiskey before. Has really encouraged me to explore more Bourbons.

If anyone has suggestions, please send them on.

That's because it's a triple-distilled single pot still whiskey :) Very unusual for a bourbon, not so unusual for an Irish whiskey.

Wow. I didn't know that. It explains alot. Are there other American whiskeys like this? The only reason I tried it was my poker buddies like Jack D and Wild Turkey so I seen it in CWS after the January tasting and got a bottle.

Not that I know of. At least Woodford Reserve describes itself as unique. But I don't know much about bourbon so someone else might be able to confirm that with more authority.

There's A. H. Hirsch's stuff, which used to be made in pot stills. And there's KBD's stuff.

Are they triple distilled too? Where would you find them?

Speaking of triple distilled I'm having some Bushmills 10 year old Malt. I'm looking at Macallan 10 year old from a sherry cask

I tried it last night as a night cap. It didn't sit well with the Woodford Reserve. Hopefully it'll go better tonight.

Just one little thing to add here - apparently the Woodford Reserve bourbon you currently buy isn't all from the Woodford pot still distillery but is blended with bourbon from Brown Forman's other distillery - Early Times, which is not a pot still operation.

Still good whiskey though.
