I missed out too did not think it would sell out so quickly, I think it is been the quickest selling tasting we've ever had.

I'm sure these won't be the most eloquent notes on the evening but for the benefit of those members unable to attend the tasting I'm happy to give an overview.

Peter Dunne from Mitchell & Son Wine and Spirit merchants guided us through a very fine selection of whiskeys including; the old bottling of Green Spot; the new bottling of Green Spot; the ten y.o. Anniversary bottling; & the twelve y.o. Anniversary bottling! Having just received my 2012 Member's glass, I took great pleasure in Christening it with the 12 y.o. Cask Strength Green Spot! Admittedly, I have now set the bar very high! Without a doubt, it really is one of the best whiskeys I have ever tasted.

It would have been very difficult to top the experience solely in terms of taste at that point. So, much to the delight of those present, a challenge was offered to the 'would-be' blenders in the room. Peter kindly provided us with the cask strength components of the standard Green Spot; Bourbon Refill, Bourbon 1st fill and Sherry Cask whiskeys. The challenge was to blend your own Green Spot whilst trying to get as close as possible to the original of course!

Compliments to the Committee for a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening and sincere thanks to Peter and Mitchell's for their generosity in terms of the whiskeys they provided and the degree to which they explained the history behind what probably is the finest (pure) single pot still whiskey!

re the Bourbon Refill, Bourbon 1st fill and Sherry Cask whiskeys used to make Green Spot, did they happen to mention how old each of the components generally were? any indication of how much refill vs first fill bourbon cask whiskey gets (generally) used? Did they mention whether the sherry casks are first fill or refill? Sounds like you all had a great time...

so does that mean the 25% sherry statement that used to be on the Mitchells website (discussed in the redbreast vs greenspot thread) is now null?

I don't think you are right there. The refill bourbon was 50%.

You shouldn't feel under pressure David, I'm sure the official Society notes will be out soon anyway!

It's true. I have about 5 articles in the queue. Compiling one at the moment. If you like apple tart, you'll like the next article. That's all I'm saying.

Hope your not ripping off Nevin Maguire

Speaking of which there is a nice little bit on Midleton on his last program ... if in Ireland (or you have a bogus Irish IP address ;-) ) see the RTE Player for the latest Nevin Maguire program and at the very start is the bit about Midleton & Jameson.

The program aired on the 26th

ahh heck ... here's the LINK

Was there any mention of the up and coming Yellow spot?

Funnily enough I couldn't be a thursday's tasting as I was working in Cork that evening. I did have time to pay a quick visit to Midleton on my travels though and who should I meet in the visitor centre only Robert and Jonathon Mitchell! They were doing some promotional filming for IDL.
