What are you having yourself?

Let's talk whiskey.

Have been on a bit of a single pot still fest lately ... so obviously when you go hell bent for leather for a while you end up rebounding the opposite way ...

So for something totally different ...

Started with a Laphroaig Feil Eile 2009 (12yo Cask strength, I think) as one of my favourite Islay's I suddenly felt that I had missed an old friend briefly :)

After a large Fryog I said might as well tone it down a bit so went for a Coal Ila ... a 25yo cask strength version from the Bladnoch forum. Not as good as the 30 yo BF version but a stunner all the same.

Now on to the first cask sterngth release of the Highland Park St Magnus. Nicely mellow compared to the previous 2 but still a cracker ...

I think that is enough of a night cap for any one ... good night.

Is this the 16yo???

I must revisit it again as I'm a bit fuzzy on it but I thought it was a fairly decent drop. Of course there is a fairly decent sherry influence on this ... are you more of a Bourbon cask man?

Simple answer yes i am. But there have been sherry monsters i liked, make that 'that i loved', a'Bunadh #20 for example. This Mortlach 16yo is a bit too sharp on the nose, and on the palate the middle is missing, all of it. I'm genuinely disappointed as there is some thing quite lovely that is unable to reveal itself. No major sulphur signature going on, but i wonder. Could this be an e150 overload, Diageo (damn them). They should have more confidence in distilleries like this. I'll investigate further soon.

That's gas - I've also been on a big pot still buzz lately and went off in a completely different direction on Saturday also - had the 25yo Laphroaig (the 40% abv one), a Laga 21yo, a Cask Strength Caol Ila 25yo (Their own bottling), A 25yo Talisker and a Port Ellen 6th Release.

Apart from the 21yo Lagavulin which had always been one of my top 5 whiskies, it would be hard to pick a favourite from the others - all big big whiskies.

Just got back from a trip to Minnesota to see my son's graduation from college. I drove 2400 miles for an hour and a half ceremony. I am tired so I will keep it simple tonight. Paddy and Powers 12.

Oh yea the Aberlour a'Bunadh has had some really cracking batches and is a great value Cask strength Sherry. I did come across one batch which was sour and not in a nice way but a once off.

In regards to the Mortlach

The Big Sherry is there (Raisin & dried currants) but not totally dominant with layers of other flavours like ripe whiskey soaked orange, sweet dark chocolate and a love dry spice bite. I think there is plenty of other stuff mingling around in there too so it really is a glass full of flavour.

This was recommended to me by a couple of Scotch Malt enthusiasts that I trust and I was delighted that they had so I find your comments surprising. I wounder is this an off bottle ... when is it from ??? ... I've checked out my Mortlach F&F and it is from 2008 ... must say I still think it is a very good drop.

Ah but worth it.
With the help of the Whiskey Gods and a sup of Diesel i'll be able to source some locally.
I'm in Wexford if anyone knows any where close to me.

There's an off licence on the left just after the bridge in New Ross which occasionally has interesting things - it's a fairly old and haphazard place but I picked up to Redbreasts from the 1980's there a couple of years ago for €75 each when they were going for around €250 elsewhere. I saw a Jameson 15 PPS in the window one day but didn't have time to stop. Can't remember the name but it's the one possible off licence I can think of in county wexford that might have what you want.

OK but be warned - sometimes they've had nothing - I've been there 3 times and have found something interesting on only 2 of those occasions.

What country are you in these days?

I'm finishing off the dregs of a Laphroaig 15, then plan on having Laga 16, Ardbeg Uigedail, and after that maybe an Ardmore or a Peated Benriach. Probably should have done this in a different order.

Passed through New Ross on Wednesday - J Nolan is the name on the place - it looks more like a pub but is just an off licence. As I said, there may be nothing of interest at this stage.

    Thanks for that Iain.
I'll be back down that direction soon i hope.
I forgot to mention that the place that i got those Redbreast Blends was Letts in Enniscorthy.
It was just by accident as these a wholesaler and i was enquiring about something else.

Looking forward now to a few sups of Greenspot with a large Mac(ardle's) after work.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Greenore 19yo, have you tried it against the 18yo?

A lot of people prefer the younger Greenores, particularly the 8yo, but I personally love the 19yo, only wish I could afford to drink it more often!!!

I think it's one of the first three casks ever filled by Cooley. Or it's the third cask filled by Cooley.
