I know this post isn't strictly "auction watch" related but does anyone know any facts/details about Baileys Irish whiskey, a google search gives no real results. Heard a rumour they coated the inside of the casks with Baileys and for that reason they had to take it off the market almost as soon as it was released.

When the editor of whisky magazine was over for whiskylive he said there were only 600 bottles released and he also thought there were plans to relaunch the brand. Any ideas when the initial release was?

In the 1990s, I think? It would make sense to resurrect the brand, given that Diageo own Bushmills, I suppose.

There were some astonishing results in January's Whiskyauctions.com
Apart from that Kilbeggan making €1122 a new whiskyauction for world whiskey.Congratulations to the buyer and seller.
Hopefully it'll drag a few more out of hiding!!
The one that caugh my attention were The John's lane made €68, it had a very high fill level for its age too but condition was good.
There were 2 Smithfield bottles, €32 for one & €53 for the one with a box, again they were in good condition.
I checked previous results and back in 2008 they were making €15 for the John's Lane (condition not good) and €18 for a Smithfield bottle.
Paddy bottles made good prices too, €47 for the whisky and €32 for the whiskey.
Then there were 3 Jameson 12 Years Old Distiller's Selection which went for €35,€35,and €39. I bid on them early but never though i end up with one for €35. Great value even with postage if you got a few other things with it.

It appears the recession is finally over if you look back on the last 6 months of results. There were some serious good whiskeys out there too.
I seen the Kilbeggan sold 5 years ago for €712. That's well over 50% increase in value (capital appreciation-i think it used to be called :?: )
Zoltan you could be the new Sean Dunne of Irish Whiskey.

I payed zero postage as my lots(4 bottles)/his lots(over ten bottles) were picked up by my friends logistic company, commission was insignificant. Just cost my a few wee drams of Greenore 19 year old when he dropped them over to my house. Now that's how you do it in style!!

Friend got an old comber and a midleton which were great value he leaves them in my tears for months, before he picks them up, Stephen looks after him.

Just a pitty they sell so little of Irish whiskey, some very special scottish bottles!

I have turned down 100 euro offer on the bottle yesterday, holding out for 150.

Thinking of going on holiday to Scotland this year a vist to mc tears is a must for me!

I got a few things at their auctions before too.Great to deal with. I've a few friends in Scotland but wouldn't trust them with a bottle of rare Whiskey or even a full one to look after. The prospect of a Greenore 19 would be wasted on them.

@ Mc Tears next Wednesday.

CADENHEAD'S IRISH WHISKEY SELECTION A limited edtion of five Irish Whiskey miniatures. One of only six sets issued.

http://www.mctears.co.uk/auctions/lot.a ... rer=browse

I'm thinking of bidding on this!
I hope it goes for less than the estimate. A serious piece of Irish whiskey history.

Yes a serious price but this is seriously rare so will be interesting to see if it makes the estimate or even exceeds it. Best of Luck.

Also another single Daly's of Tullamore, this time a 41yo from 1949.

Est of £200 - £300 which I think is very optimistic. Have never seena single one go for over £50.

See here

http://www.mctears.co.uk/auctions/lot.a ... rer=browse

Lot 736 is four Bushmills, A regular but older White Bush signed by Master Distiller Frank Hardy.
A black bust in a decanter style bottle. A 12yo 1608 Special reserve and the Millennium 12yo edition also.

Lot 758 2 Single casks from the late 1990's early 2000's again signed. probably 1 sherry & 1 Bourbon.

Lot 759 a very interesting Millennium Malt pre selection. 1975 -1994 Obviously some one could not wait and had a few bottles removed before the Millennium. And a Bushmills Distillery reserve again both signed by Frank.

further lots.

Lot 760 a Millennium Malt and a single cask

All estimated 80-120 and all would be bargains if got at those prices but the highlight there has to be the Pre-Selection Millennium Malt.

Lot 770 a 2000 Midleton VR Est £200-300

Lot 800. Another rare chance to pick up a Coleraine 34yo Single Malt

Est €800-1000 it says with Presentation plaque but no mention of a box which is disappointing so possibly over valued.

Lot 826. 2004 Midleton Est £200-300 again a bit over cooked me thinks.

Lot 907 ditto

Think I got most of them but possibly not. Some nice lots there.

Quick question for those of you who have sold on whiskyauction - do you know who you've sold to or is it done via the hosts? Just curious.

lot 683 has a tirconnell PPS and a Redbrest 12 along with a Welsh 10 malt. Estimate 50 euros.

It will be interesting to see the prices alright, i'm hoping they are at the lower end.

The whiskeyauction has been dissappointing Irish wise for the last few months, saying that Mc Tears don't have any Irish bottles some months.

Forum members may wish to read this quite disturbing auction experience from a whisky connoisseur called Luc Timmermans
http://ymlp.com/zInnK0

As for the auction discussion so far I would be interested to hear of your thoughts about how the GErman "WhiskyAuction.com" works; basically it seems to have a high throughput, but sellers have to send their bottle(s) to Germany for them to be included in auction. I may be out of date regarding fees, but when I last looked the fee was about 20% of sale value.

Would the fee plus the cost of postage still make it worthwhile for a seller?

You have to send to the Auction house and they post out so the option is not really open to us here in Ireland entering bottles unless you have access to a relative cheap means of couriering them.

Very disconcerting and thanks for highlighting. I think it is down right wrong and McTears should refund Luc. It is clear from the pictures that they look sealed and would never give you an inkling that you should have the need to request a condition report. I think Luc should take this further as in my eyes the Auction misrepresented the items in the photo's they provided and I would imagine that should acount for some legal protection.

As stated above to Iain I would not imagine that many in Ireland avail of the Service. I have worked out that between Ebay fees and Paypal fees you pay between 13-15% on your end price so a better deal for us as Postage to Germany I think would not make it worth while. However if I had access to a commercial Courier rate and shipped in bulk that would be different. I would imagine that the Majority of bottles are from main land Europe where sending bulk items is much lower in comparison to the UK & especially Ireland. However they do seem to command very good prices and I think if one can get onesbottles to WhiskyAuction cheaply it would pay one to do so. Irish Whiskey prices on WhiskyAuction seem to be the highest around which would suggest they have a very good following. Back in the early days you could get some great bargains but not so much so any more.

whiskyauction is very expensive to sell on, with charges of around 20%, as mentioned. Now scotchwhiskyauctions.com is effectively charging about the same amount... adding 10% of the hammer price on for the buyer and taking 10% plus a fee from the seller. I hope I'm not misrepresenting them, so correct me if I'm wrong.

McTears is about 15%, isn't it? whiskyauction.com gets quite high prices, of course.

One of the Tullamore miniatures from Cadenhead went on eBay just very recently for about £65... And they are the most common ones.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the majority of regular Auction houses (As McTeears is) charge both ways. i.e. to both Seller and buyer and 15% is the norm. WhiskyAuction only charges the seller at a higher rate which is not much good to you if your selling but great for the seller.

Also with regular Auction houses you have to pay vat on the commission. Not sure about here in Ireland but certainly in the UK.

For instance if you buy something for £100 you are charged £15 commission and then Vat on the £15 quid which is 20% in the UK so another £3

So a total of £118.

Ta for that. Not planning on selling anything but have occasionally bought stuff there - just wondering if the sellers know who they're selling to.

The prices certainly have gone up there over the last while - I'd say it's probably at least partially down to the members of this forum becoming more aware of the site and possibly even creating our own mini bubble. There's been a few discussions here and moreso elsewhere recently about the value of whiskeys as investments. One example is the sort of mad figures being thrown around for a complete set of Midletons. I'm just not that sure that big increases can be counted on when there's a relatively small pool interested in old and rare Irish whiskeys. I know some people have talked about certain whiskeys going up by 10, 20% etc. in the last year. But you could also note that Diageo and Pernod Ricard shares have gone up by 20% and 15% in the last 6 months. We all know that doesn't mean it stays that way. (I personally like the idea of buying these shares as I feel whenever I buy a Bushmills, Midleton, Guinness, Lagavulin, etc etc. that somewhere along the way I'd be getting a tiny bit of the money back!)

I think the Irish whiskey values sometimes remind me of the mad growth in the prices of "trophy" homes in dublin in the early 2000s. There was a small group all bidding against each other which sent the prices mad. (And I mean on a far bigger scale that the already mad bubble in general house prices). Once the tap was turned off these prices collapsed completely, far worse than the national average. Personally I think 2 or 3 people eager to buy would be all it would take to creat a mini bubble in the Irish whiskeys on Whiskyauction. I'm probably one of them.

I'm not really making a point about anything here, just some idle musings.

Thank you for that post. Very disturbing. I've been lucky with any auction purchases so far. The only issue i ever had was resolved quickly and favourably.

I would always ask for a condition report if i see clingwrap on one too. I bough an expensive bottling a number of years age online for a reputable whisky shop and the box was in a very poor state. It cost me to got it repaired then. When i contacted the shop they told me that because they were selling on behalf of someone, it was sold as seen.

Here's a little gem I found if any of our American friends are interested (or others if you are willing to deal with customs)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Full-Ol ... 6503wt_932

A bottle of Bushmills 9 year old. I hope it's true to the description. It looks very cheap at the moment. $26 at time of posting

If it were here it would fetch some serious price i bet. Here's an example online :o
