€2,700 as a starting bid is fairly hopeful, isn't it?

They'll be selling individual bottles and half bottles too. You could still get your hands on one.

As someone who buys whiskey for a personal collection and for future consumption, if love to try some of these old whiskies. I'd certainly pay as much as I would for a top quality contemporary bottle, even if they are fairly standard bottles from yesteryear.

I wouldn't be able to justify spending more than €100 on one though, yet they are trying to sell them for €300-500 a piece (based on 8 bottles for €2,700 to €4000).

I wonder do all these old bottles just end up on the shelves of pubs and such?

Don't forget commission, which adds another c. 20%, these retail 800-1000, so at 50% the specialist retailer price the guide is spot on.

whiskyauctions.com had a huge amount of Irish whiskey in the last auction (end 31 August)

Hewitts got €100

Jameson 15 got €77
Jameson 12 of the same era got €242 :o
Jameson Masters Selection 18 year old €73. I'm surprised it got so little,
other Jamesons ranged from €13 to €37

The Marconi's made €57,63 & 74. I missed all.
Jameson horse made €45, I was outbid of one a few years ago for €150.
Jameson 1780 12 year old €33. I expected that to make €50.

Powers for €23 to €52 fair prices for older bottles.

Lockes limited edition €98, that was a good price, I think the last one went for €47.
A kilbeggan 15 got €57

Tullamore DEW from €14 to €29 were very cheap.

Good value to be had. I hope everyone got a bargain or two. I wish I'd be able to get some myself but was away from a computer. I don't know if I could on the phone.

The Jameson 12 @ 242Euro was very big money but it def. is scarcer than the Jameson 15
of the same period. Personally I find the low prices on those particular crocks amazing
as they are def. from the John's Lane Distillery.

Cheers for those Zoltan. I was hoping to keep track but didn't get the time. The full one went well above the high estimate and even the half bottles were well over.
Glad to see some people out there not feeling the pinch from the resession.

I don't think they have anything like that. You'd think they may have a reserve similar to other online auctions.

I checked again this morning to see if I was right. I'm a happy man. Cheers

whiskeyauction.com pretty much works on the basis of €0.00 starting price and no reserve. So where ever it ends that is the price. You can be lucky or you can see mad prices.

However never take any one auction as a true reflection of a price but a probably an average of several auctions is more reflective.

plus 35 for shipping...

i found it better if you buy 2-3 bottles so it spreads the cost of shipping

Whiskyauctions.com had an old Green Spot 10
Image
which went for €902. A great price. I knew it wouldn't go cheap.

It would be a great addition to anyone's collection.

Another interesting one was a bottle of Vat Six
Image
It's from the old Cork Distillery. Another nice bottle. It got €204.

It didn't get any bottles this time but it was a good one to follow. Hopefully a few more oddities come out of hiding.

Do the commission and postage fees not make these cheaper bottles something of a false economy?

If you get multiple bottles is spreads the cost of postage. If you were getting say the Paddy, a Tullamore and Tyrconnell say. The cost was €34 I think. Postage is €23 and handling is €9. That comes to €66. It may still be cheaper that the shops but it's not value.

I usually factor this in before I bid. I usually get a few bottles because if you get one it's €19+ €3 handling. I managed to get some nice older bottles and a few cheap one. I would have saved myself €50+ and got a few rare ones.

Other auctions charge commission, sometimes 16% and VAT on top and this can drive the costs up. If you need to get them posted than the cost is often not worth it.
I try take it in account at all auctions. It's worth while making a list before and give yourself a max price. It's sticking to this that's the problem.

There was a 1999 Midleton which sold for £90 + commission &VAT + exchange rate. Around €150/160 I'm guessing. Cheap for the buyer. It's a pity that there wasn't more Irish whiskeys.
