Tullamore, Birr and Kilbeggan form a cluster of distilling in the midlands.
Thomas and Stephen Woods distilled for about five years in Birr around 1802. They were the survivors of the four smaller distillers from the carnage caused by the 1779 still levy. Maguire records Arthur Robinson and Robert Hackett operating distilleries in 1822, one folded in 1840 the other established in 1805 and acquired by R & J Wallace survived until it ceased after a fire destroyed the premises in 1889 just after Barnard’s visit.
Despite abundant local turf Daly’s distillery chartered ships to bring coal to the distillery along the Grand Canal

Bannagher had a distillery in mentioned in Lewis Topographical dictionary 1837 - it may have become a maltings and Midland Maltings operated there into the 1980s

Barnard has a page on Wallace's of Birr 1805- 1889 due to a fire Brian Townsend has three pages on Birr
