Everything Irish Whiskey Society related.

Motto

Postby rathbeggan » Fri May 01, 2009 10:02 pm

I asked last night if we could do a poll for the Whiskey Society motto.

My suggestion is:

"Success to temperance".

My dad always used to say that as a toast.

To see a World in a Grain

After William Blake:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

Actually, the next line of that poem is:

A Robin Redbreast in a Cage...

Redbreast... that has to be a sign. I really like this motto. If the society doesn't adopt it, I'm using it for my own website.

Kaixo Chico´s,
Living on the northern rugged coastal route to Santiago and on the British retreat to from La Coruna to Vitoria during the Pennisular Wars(remember Sharpe & Harper´s shenanagans) i have an interest in Irish/Pennisular war history which i present during my tastings to battlefield tour groups.
And in Napiers History of the Pennisular War ,,"Nothing so startled the French soldiery as the Wild yell (Fag an Bealach) = "Clear the way" of the Irish soldiers..Pity it did´nt work on Henri the other day !!

PS, over 40% of the British Army was Irish(the Irish tock the only Eagle of the line)
The French had the famous Irish Brigade(tock the only Brit reg colours at Fontenoy)
The Spanish had the famous Irish regiments,Irlanda,Hibernia,Ultonia & Limerick

Any way , clear the nose,or clear the throat etc
or Whiskey agus Failte (Whiskey is welcome) or Brughai Abu (Innkeepers to victory)
Slain agus Slainte,,
Whiskey Pilgrim, "Cock o´Bizkaia"!!

Whiskey, it's a tradition.

Got a gaelgór to have a look and this is what she said

An oiread sin Fuisce, gan leath a ndóthain ama.

(so much whiskey not half enough time)-

Another one I came up with could be

"Uisce beatha, is rud Gaelach é"

Whiskey, it's an Irish thing

However in fluent Irish speakers Uisce Beatha seems to be Fuisce so that's a nice slant to it.

I like the sound of "Fáigh a´bhealach"

What about "An té nach leigheasann im ná uisce beatha níl aon leigheas air..." as in IWC´s sig, a great old saying

I really like this one. Add to end of it:

"YEAH!"
