Shock Horror - Scotch Irish whiskey

Let's talk whiskey.

Shock Horror - Scotch Irish whiskey

Postby shanel23 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 10:11 am

OK - am down in Madrid on business and went for a nice meal with a group from Germany , UK and Ireland - so had a nice meal and we were going to have an after dinner drink ( I voted whiskey but we ended up having a brandy - Carlos 1 ( excellent by the way ))

Then the horror moment when one of the Irish guys says we should also have a scotch - fine I said - then he suggested a Powers or a Paddy ( both were on the shelf ) . I informed him in no uncertain terms that they were both Irish whiskies and he said he knew they were Irish but where he is from ( Roscommon ) these are known as Scotch whiskies as they are made "like a scotch" ( his words )

Very surprised that this type of thinking is out there

Ireland makes the best Scotch in the world, in my opinion.

Indeed. Could Midleton now claim to be the most westerly scotch distillery in the world?

Paddy possibly with it's Malt content in the blend if that is where they are coming from.. but Powers categorically no with it's high PPS content in it which is in no way like any scotch whiskey made.

The only thing I can see this coming from is when they moved to blended status but for "Hey Zuss's" sake tell him to drop such mad notions. Obviously Roscommon is totally at odds with the rest of the country.

Wash that man's mouth out with lashings of PPS and educate the heathen.

In my experience, much of the United States still think only of Scotch when they hear the word "whisk[e]y". This, despite the fact that the United States produces quite a few whiskeys domestically, most notably from Kentucky and Tennessee.

Fun Fact: The distillery that produces Jack Daniels whiskey is in a "dry" county, meaning sale of alcohol is illegal in that county.

I think every effort should be made to "scotch" that rumour before it gets legs.....
