Green Spot followed by an Ardbeg 10. My first Ardbeg, have tried Laphroaig 10 before didn't notice too much difference but still a lovely dram.

I'm having a drink with Basil Hayden tonight, Even Williams will be joining us soon.

Has anyone noticed how much Irish and American whiskeys are called after people?

The Even Williams was a single barrel and went down well. I'm still sipping the Basil Hayden and it's really interesting stuff. I'd go with the Williams if forced to choose.

Lockes 8 yo last night. Complex for it's age, was surprised at the light peat traces in the finish. Good stuff.

Mini tasting (I.e. using my English spirit measure) of young(ish) SPS whiskey - Green Spot, paddy 7yo, powers signature. Amazing really how whiskeys from one distillery at similar ages can be so different.

Glenlivet Master Distillers Reserve

Bought for a steal at £29.99 for 1L in Heathrow on special offer in my London purchases outlined on thread below!

Matured in three casks american oak, traditional oak and sherry and blended together! Unfortunately its a 40%!!

Decided to have a tasting last night and this is a non peat smoked very smooth balanced scotch which with every sup called for more. I intended having a tasting dram but ended up having a good few measures as was so smooth and would be quite amazing if available in cask strength as it could handle it.

On special offer at £29.99 for 1L i have to admit as much as it hurts no Irish whiskey in price range would match up. Its sad but I can see true Irish fans moving more towards Scotch every day as far superior value is available!

Currently doing damage to a 37 yr old 1976 BenRiach. This is one of the finest whiskies I've ever tasted!
More details another time.

Last night ...

Started with the dreggs of a Powers JL which made a nice large drop.

Washed down with a couple McGargles IPA and then finished the night with another large one, this time a Laphroaig PX cask.

A nice relaxing night and really enjoyed the whiskies and IPA combo.

god it's been too long since I've had an Uigedail... Havent been blown away by the more recent Ardbegs but used to adore the stuff and Uigedail is a modern classic.

I've tried, but can't understand the fuss about Ardbeg.

I haven't the finest palate on earth, but Uigeadail and Corryvreckan leave me cold. Very fine spirit and carefully vatted but... where's the soul? :geek:

Laphroaig Quarter Cask does more for me - am I shallow? ;)

coryvreckan didn't do much for me either and the subsequent bottlings have done dramatically less. The 70's Ardbegs had that gorgeous floral back note of almost lowlandy lilac (the lost lowlanders come to mind) that not only made itself miraculously heard over all the smoke but made the smoke itself that much more interesting. I have a good friend in California who insists that Ardbeg died with the disappearance of that inexplicable floral tinge to the smoke and i can see where he's coming from. No idea what they're doing differently these days but it's just not there. Some of those 70's casks were vatted in to Uigeadail which may be what i'm really tasting there but a lot of the new stuff is just smoke for the sake of smoke. Laphroaig Quarter Cask is gorgeous stuff isnt it. Like drinking an estuary.

Laphroaig's whisky is a lot heavier than Ardbeg's. Very different whiskies, I think. Both sweet, though.

I remember hearing something about the purifier in the spirit still at Ardbeg. Was it "turned off" at the distillery in the 1970s or something like that? Not sure if I'm getting mixed up.

Anyway, I think Ardbeg produces great whisky and I love the Corryvreckan, but there are Ardbeg fans who will say anything the distillery produces is fantastic, even if it's sludge.

there's a little bulbous copper 'sweetener' along the lyne arme of the ardbeg stills for a little extra vapour-copper contact to encourage a few extra esters in the distilled vapours before they condense... no idea if it's changed since the old seventies bottlings

I finished off my Barry Crockett Legacy. I love this stuff. It's a pity it come at such a premium, but I can understand.

We tasted the a 19 Pot Still aged in Virgin oak at the presidents tasting this year. It was without a doubt the finest I've tasted. This is used in the production of the Legacy.

that BCL really is gorgeous stuff. ALl the same, i'd love to see a virgin oak expression on its own. Had some of the CWS virgin oak midleton blend last night which i think helped me get a clearer idea of what the virgin oak does to a Midleton mashbill in general. Class stuff all around

I really hope they release a Virgin Oak regular edition SPS. I've yet to taste a whiskey with a Virgin Oak component in its make up that I didn't like. Well I only have tried 3, Marconi Jameson, Jameson Gold and the Barry Crockett Legacy. I'm excluding the example at the Presidents Tasting because its not readily available.

I've found a bottle of Forester 96. I started drinking it a few years ago and then forgot about it. I think I'll be using the remainder for a few experimental blends.
