Let's talk whiskey.

Just back from the latest Celtic whiskey shop distillery tour. Fantastic as ever and picked up a few new gems:

BenRiach 1976 cask 2013 aged 37 years
Glenlivet French oak dist 1983 bott 2003
Glenmorangie Ealanta 1993 bott 2012 matured in virgin oak

What seemed to be new this year is that every distillery we went to was talking about using virgin oak - all 8 of them.

Only 30 years behind the same innovation by Irish Distillers, who have been practising the art with their B Zero's since the mid 1980s, first seen in their 1995 Jameson Special Reserve Marconi Radio bottling

Indeed. It was fascinating that it had rarely been mentioned on other trips and this year they all brought it up. Why only now I'm not sure when some of them had been in virgin oak for quite some time.

Very nice. The 1976 BenRiachs are very well regarded, whatever happened that year.

they say it is because i was born in 1976, and they just wanted all the whiskey produced to the best quality in that year as a respect to me

Finally got a Barry Crockett Legacy! Has anyone tried the CWS twin rum cask Midleton? Is it worth a purchase?

Have a few hours free on Wednesday before a meeting in Dublin, driving up from Clare in the morning. Was considering buying a bottle or 2 somewhere, should I go to Kilbeggan or Jameson in Dublin or the CWS?

CWS.

Apart from the excellent new Celtic Casks there's new Stock of Glendronach Single Cask and Benriach Single Cask if you want to try something different.

Went for a GlenDronach 18 on the recommendation of the tall guy with glasses in CWS and a bottle of Writers Tears. GlenDronach is a smasher and the Tears is a personal favourite.

Paddy Centenary. I got them in Wexford would you believe. Green Acres in Selskar. They had the Spot Range and lots of Redbreasts.

I shall be reducing my carbon footprint from now on.

I got the latest Writers Tears Cask Strength. I think it's the 3rd on so far. I also got a nice bottle of 12 year old Yoichi. Very pleasant first sample.

A few whiskyauction additions, 2005 Redbreast 15 and an old bottling of Jameson gold. €137 for the two, although P&P will add another €25/30 to it. It's still good value for the quality of the whiskey I believe.

I finally got a bottle of Redbreast 21. I've no plans for it yet but I'm waiting for that special occasion(excuse).

I would have thought acquiring a bottle of redbreast 21 might be an occasion worth celebrating. ;)
