Your Own Blends???

Let's talk whiskey.

Your Own Blends???

Postby IainB » Thu Jul 02, 2009 11:24 pm

I don't think I'm the only one here who occasionally mixes up different whiskeys to see how they would turn out. Most are rubbish to be honest. But I've been trying for a while to come up with a Cooley blend I like as much, say, as Black Bush or Jameson 12yo. I love Cooley malts and their single grain but the blends just don't do it for me. I think, though, I've finally cracked it.

After much experimentation I've got the following mix (percentages reasonably accurate)

(1) 55% Tyrconnell 15yo
(2) 30% Tyrconnell 10yo Sherry Finish
(3) 15% Greenone 15yo

Leave to marry for a few minutes (if you smoke the time taken to pop outside is perfect).

I know, I know, there's some good whiskey gone in there, so how could I really go wrong, but I like this one I've just made up my 3rd batch this week. (70ml at a time is all).

Anyway, there you go.

Has anyone ever tried a mix of peated and pure pot still? I've put some Greenspot in a hip flask that had a bit of Taketsuru (peaty Japanese blend) in it and it was great! A lovely smoky hint with the spice and vigour of the PPS.

I've tried it a few times. Usually adding Laphroaig 10 to something. Only the smallest few drops. I've had some success. I can't remember exactly what I tried.

Also, have tried mixing Invergordon 35 with Corryvreckan and it was very good.

Jameson 12 + Laphroaig Cairdeas 12yo circa 4:1 ... I actually was surprised how the Jameson dominated the blend with the Phroaig loosing most of it's charachteristics but giving this excellent islay edge to the entire project. HAlf and half you'd expect the Islay to dominate but I wonder ??? Probably would actually but the Jemmie 12 would totally soften it out I'd imagine.

Can get a lot of salt on the nose though but the Jameson really holds it's own on taste with some beautiful and interesting phroaig edges and spice. Very interesting and something I must do with maybe Tyrconnell and Lap 10yo.

What a fun thread ...

Interesting! I'm just thinking, as I read these posts, about the interaction of malt and PPS in a blend. If you forget about peat for the moment, which is something very distinctive, what is the effect of malt and PPS combined. Is it just like altering the mix of malted and unmalted barley in the original mix or someting completely different?

The reason I say this is to question whether adding peated malt to a pure pot still is comparable to having a PPS where some of the malt is peated.

I haven't a clue by the way. Just wondering. What does anyone else think?

Jameson 15 and Redbreast 15.

Just trying it now. Bloody hell, sensory overload. I'll admit this isn't the first whiskey of the night but this is good stuff. There's an awful lot going on - a bit like the Jameson Rarest in that way. I'm getting both the older and new styles of PPS aat the same time. Nothing's been cancelled out - it's all there at the same time with a very very long finish!

Probably true. I've had a Pure pot still night. Greenspot, Redbreast 12, Redbreast 15, Jameson 15 and when I'd nothing else to to I stared mixing them. Maybe I should go to bed.

You're right - I was just eyeing up the poteen and the redbreast 12. Actually come to think of it, that's a really good idea.

You may be right Luke but I guess there's an inner blender in some of us just trying to get out. Also, we often discuss things we'd like to see thie distillers do, and when they won't sometimes we have to do it for ourselves!

I think I still owe you a few drinks the next time we're the same pub, by the way!

Does anyone else keep a bottle where they pour the dregs of other bottles.

I keep one and to be honest the results are usually pretty poor - as you would expect with the dregs.

Anyway, I've a question. The bottle currently contains varying amounts of Tyrconnell, Longrow, Glenlivet, Arran, Lpahraoig, and a few others, some in very small quantities. I've almost finish a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Would it be mad to add this to the mix??

Bourbons are usually more sweet but also more wood influenced so some people find them a bit overpowering compared with the complexities of Scotch but I don't see why not ... you have a laphroaig in there also. Will be interesting if any one whisk(e)y stands out.

What was the Buffalo Trace like ... I was thinking of buying a bottle.

Well I like the buffalo trace but that doesn't mean anything really - I'll send you a sample and you can decide then.

I suppose if I just add a small amount of the bourbon and approach it as a blend rather than a vatted malt.
