The Times has a story about the resurgence of Irish Whiskeys but I can't seem to find any details about the launch that occurs today.

'Irish Examiner' today had quite a good article on
the Distillery in Glendalough and how they penetrated
the market initially by becoming the 'barman's friend',
cocktail competitions etc. Good article

launched at a party @ 'The Boogaloo' pub in Highgate,North London
on Friday night last was 'The Pogues' official Irish whiskey of the famous
band. 'The Pogues' linked up with West Cork Distillers for to create this new
brand.

Probably aimed at the section of the market that aims to imbibe high
quantities as distinct from high quality :?:

You have to be careful Raven, one of the cofounders has a habit of going after people you say anything he considers negative.
I've read here that Barry Walsh is also involved. They got Frank McHardy on board recently too. If the can keep them they will have a positive effect in time.

They were alway a little vague with their marketing. They claim that it's a record high Malt content at 50% but even Murphy's Premium had that. To my knowledge the blend with the highest Malt content is Bushmills Anniversary blend. If John wishes to call me on this he has my number. ;)

I believe that Blackbush is 80% malt... And I have heard that the 1608 stuff is 95% malt, but I don't know for sure.

Given that Frank McHardy knows a lot about Bushmills, maybe he didn't have much say about the marketing of this new stuff.

I hope West Cork Distillers do well and that they make good stuff.

Hi GWH,
The article you reference from the 'Express' gives a fuller indication of the launch which sounds like it
was a most enjoyable night and from that article it is quite clear with a 50% single malt content it is
certainly no supermarket whiskey. Personally though I find it not a good development for the future to
see such a direct relationship between music bands and the alcohol industry particularly at a time when
society is trying to unpick alcohol advertising in sport. I'll still pick up a bottle though !

What scares me more is the price the whiskey is selling for. It'll probably be €40/45 when & if it sells in Ireland. It's a 3 year old whiskey. I was paying that sort of money for Green Spot & Redbreast only a few years ago. The recession certainly has had an effect on prices here and in the wrong was. They can go on about taxes but these prices are not taxes. It's profiteering Irish style.

I totally agree. Those prices particularly in the UK will come home
to roost when the Euro strengthens against the Pound as it will do (until
the next Greek crisis). Then scotch will look very cheap in comparison
with some of our products.

Anyone ever heard about killing the goose that has laid the golden egg????

High praise indeed, a pity it's US only. Looks quite dark but that may only be the picture.

I see from the planning docs that they intend to produce single malt and single pot still at 60o/o Irish barley to 40 o/o Irish malt . The Wash still is 10K ltr, intermediate still being 7.5 K ltr and the spirit still is 5.0 K ltr. It must be something of a first that a Toyota garage has been converted to a distillery. With all the glass the 3 stills will be very visible .

This is not in the news yet but House of Donohue went into liquidation last Wednesday. The company did all the cork bottles for Midleton. I believe the Power's are now bottled in the Fox & Geese.
Donohues also bottle Writers Tears & the Irishman whiskeys as far as I know.

They also make West Coast Cooler for IDL. I'm not sure what's happening but I'm sure it's in IDLs interest to keep them going.
