Stolen Whiskey

Postby Good Whiskey Hunting » Fri Dec 05, 2014 2:35 am

I'm suprised I hadn't seen a post on the 15000 bottles of stolen Jameson here. This happened 3 weeks ago and was all over facebook.

Here NYdaily news story.
and here's some Australian versions of the story.

The batch numbers of those stolen are L428112153, L428312172 and L428016141.

Another way of making cheap "whiskey" palatable. Here's the stick. What next? Putting a branchs of timber into pressure chamber vats with cheap spirit, then force the liquor into and out of the timber and hope over time to create a spirit that could be sold as whiskey, ah no that's too far fetched.

Good spot Willie and looks like an interesting project to play with.

However the idea has actually been around for a good while. They have used oak chips in wine for years?

Compas Box when they originally came out with their inovative Spice Tree they inserted Oak staves in to their young whisky casks to improve (and accelerate) the oak influence. Unfortunately this fell foul of the SWA and it was eventually banned. Managed to get a couple bottles of the original at the time of release though and the Spice Tree was actually a very nice whisky. I still have one in storage hoping it will be worth a small fortune in years to come  doubtful though :drunk:

Also fruitwood chips were used by Wasmund's to create their Rappahannock single malt. Not a successful experiment in my opinion.

Trademark application for a whiskey brand has been lodged by lissadell house
the former Sligo home of the famous Revolutionary, Countess Markievicz --- appropriately
called ' The Countess ' --- snippet from the Business section of 'The Sunday Times' of
the 11th. January last. During Easter week the Countess had trenches dug in Stephen's Green
from where shots were directed against 'The Shelbourne' causing some guests to take shelter
under the breakfast table. She did trojan work amonst the poor of Dublin's tenements after
the war of Independance.

Could there be a connection between the Cassidy family, the owners of Lissadell House, and the Cassidys of the Monasterevan distillery that was?
And, of course, there is the Cassidy's whiskey sold by Marks and Spencer.

The Spirit Business has a write up for the new Redbreast Mano a Lamh.

Here's an article about Kilbeggan 8 year Grain. These will replace the Greenore grain. I'm assuming that the Greenores are now going to be very collectable.

I read this about Diageo's lack of motivation to do anything with Bushmills and then I read this about Grants looking to push Tullamore.

Tullamore DEW is now the No:2 best selling Irish brand and they done this without a distillery. Amazing bit of marketing.

When you think that the vast majority of TD whiskey is Midleton it'd be interesting to figure out how many cases all the brands produced there sell annually.

You have 5 millions cases of Jameson, nearly a million in TD, and whatever all the various other Midleton brands add up to. If you wanted to be really pedantic you could also say that a good chunk of what is sold as Bushmills is also Midleton whiskey - about 70% of white bush and 20% of Black Bush as far as I know.

I suppose you could say a chunk of Tullamore's stuff is Bushmills too.

The article says that they bought the distillery for 400 million, sold it for 560 million, making a 160 million profit. That kind of ignores the 100 million investment. I suppose they would have made some profit too.

I wonder was the 100million extension investment included as part of the 400million purchase and development of the brand. That would make it a good return alright.

When were we going to hear this?

I had my issues with the West Cork Distillers but this is a game changer. They've got Frank McHardy on board now. Hopefully they'll start producing a little more quality now. My conversations with the owner didn't go astray after all.

The Knoxnews article had a few things incorrect too, like the distillery being founded in 2003, but we've come to expect these sort of thing.

Not in actually expected them to get better.

I'm not sure it will GWH. McHardy is obviously well involved here with the introduction of both West Cork Original Irish Whiskey & West Cork 10 Year Single Malt bottlings. However we are still no nearer to knowing what is actually going on down there. All this cloak and dagger stuff is just silly. They should be open and talk freely about what and how they are doing down there.

I'm all for inovative ideas but I also want to know exactly what I'm drinking and how it is produced.

Midleton have launched a new Single Pot Still. I seen it on a friends facebook but WhiskyCask has a good discription.

This is the first in a series that Brian Nation and Barry Leighton have developed. I know this is going to be expensive but I look forward to trying some. I don't know any other whiskey that has used Virgin Irish Oak.

The Spirit Business has a article on the 10 most influential people in Irish Whiskey. Would you agree or would you have others included.

Great link John, thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading that well written article; it was also amusing to learn about the quote attributed to the late and great Séamus Heaney!

Forbes top 10 Irish Whiskeys. I'd agree with some but not all. They could research things a little better too. (500 bottles of Green Spot released each year)?hmmm

Well in fairness the forbes article is dated 2007 .... I was going to comment that it was an old lazy list and not reflective of the increased range of whiskies now available but it was probably a fair list back then.
